HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY CHRONICI,E. 9
tour at the Regimental Depot, and may leave
for home any time now.
About now polo was again seriously taken in
hand, and the ponies, which had all summered
well, were taken up and put into hard work.
On the 27th Oct. the first Half Battalion
went into camp at Kokrail for field training
under Major Andrews, where they were
practice, which, later on at Cawnpore, they
fully justified.
The Army Cup was won by Captain Gibbs'
(Coldstream Gds., A.D.C.), "Poniard," admirably
ridden by Mr. Charrington, Royal Dragoons,
b..ating the favourite, ridden by Captain Tomkinson,
Royal Dragoons, after a great race.~_~
COMPANY TRAINING NEAR KOKRAIL CAMP.
attacked at dawn on the 10th Nov, with disastrous
results.
On the 12th Nov. we welcomed Colonel
Stockwell, D.S.O., back from leave, looking
fresh and fit after his visit to Scotland.
From the 13th Nov. to the 22nd we were in
the throes of the Army Cup Week. Lucknow
was full-from attics to cellars. I am told that
in our mess alone "covers" were laid for upwards
of fifty.
I canllot attempt to describe that" week."
Event after event followed so quickly one upon
another that it is impossible at this distance of
time to recall all that took place. Suffice it to
say there Was a fancy dress ball, two balls at
Government House, the Army ball at the
Chutt,er Munzil, and at least two other dances.
The Polo Tournament was won by Captain
Barrett's (15th Hussars) team of "Scouts,"
beating the 17th Lancers in the final after that
team had beaten our regimental team in the
seII.Ii-final.. Our team put in quite a good game
and promIsed well for the future, with more
getting out of last place, while his fortunate
owner managed to recoup himself handsomely
by naming 1, 2, 3 at the remunerative price of
Rs.1000 to Rs.lO, which he successfully landed.
On the 23rd Nov. 'the other Half Battalion,
under Captain Singleton, D.S.O., proceeded:to
camp, to be later joined by the remainder of
the Regiment, to undergo Battalion training
and Lord Kitchener's tests under Colonel
Stockwell, D.S.O.
On the 29th Nov. the polo team proceeded
to Cawnpore to play in the Cooper-AlIen
Tournament. In the second round they met
the Gordon Highlanders, and, after a most
exciting game, the H.L.I. leading all the way,
and the Gordons equalising as goal after goal
was scored. Extra time had to be played and
the goal-posts widened. The H.L.I. won by /)
goals to 4.
That evening Colonel de Lisle, who has done
so much for our team, telegraphed to Colonel
Stockwell the hearty congratulations of the
Royals at our success.
