Betting-2.1 Teufel, 3·1 Fluke, Blue Flame, and
Aliwal, 7·1 Dina, Miss Ta.tters, and Nilgai. 25.1 the
others.
The course was a stiff one, and was laid out
by Major Ronaldson. The first mile was
(lver very steep dongas. There were two
water jumps in the course. Teufel led for
most of the earlier part of the race. With a
little over a mile to go Fluke took up the
running, but was caught close home by Teufel,
who won by a neck. Aliwal was third, half
.a length behind. Piscator and Bombay fell
but did no serious damage.
Unfortunately, after Major Ronaldson had
placed the flags a surveyor had come over the
ground, and one of his flags was mistaken
for a turning point by everyone except Mr.
Camp bell, who turned back and went the
correct course. The Stewards accordingly
disqualified Teufel, and awarded the race to
Miss Tatters.
Betting-6.4 Drummer Boy. 2.1 Fizzer and Fluke,
,3·1 Antelope and Miss Tatters, 4·1 Duke, 7·1 Shomer.
~O·1 Aliwal, Pisca.tor, and Eclipse, 33·1 others. .
Shomer, Miss Tatters, Duke, and Drummer
Boy were first away, with Fizzer, Fluke, and
Antelope in the rear. Miss Tatters was !l.bout
half a length in front of Drummer Boy after
going a hundred yards, but in the last hundred
yards the field closed up, and Antelope,
catching Miss Tatters on the post, won by a
short head; a neck between second and third;
the remainder of the field in a body a
length behind.
In the second heat Antelope won comfortably
by a length and a half from Miss Tatters,
with Blue Belle, half a length off, third. It is
inadvisable to place much reliance on the
placings in the second heat, aR the "fly
division" were already thinking of next year.
FOR this quarter's issue we have very little
to report as regards sports, as we have the
manceuvres season with us at present, and
that is quite enough to absorb our attention;
and our monthly meetings have been set aside
until the summer comes on again. During
our half- battalion training, however, we
found time to run an Inter-Section 6-a-side
Football Tournament on the American sV'stem
~that is, in two divisions, the winning teams
of each division meeting each other in the
final. "A," "D," "G," and "K" Companies
were away to Kokrail Oamp, and the
other half battalion in barracks played off
their ties, which resulted in No. 4 Section,
" H " Oompany, getting into the final. "A,"
" D," " G," and" K" marched in from camp,
and were relieved by the other Companies;
they also played off, and No. 1 Section, " D "
Company, gaint'd the honour of meeting No. 4,
" H" Oompany. As" H" and "I" Oompanies
had received orders to proceed to Oawnpore
in relief of the Scottish Rifles, until such
time as the Gordons arrived from the line of
march between Calcutta and Dinapore, they
came i11 from camp sooner than expected,
and went off next day to Cawnpore, but
played off the final tie on the night of their
arrival from Kokrail. The game was very
even, and the result was in doubt until the
final whistle found "H" Company winners
by 1 goal 4 corners to " D " Oompany's 1 goal
3 c.orners. The teams were as followR :
No. 4 Section, "H" Company-Oorpl.
M'Menemy, Iltes. Sergeant, Sergeant, Welfare,
'ronner, and Gordon.
No. 1 Section, "D" Oompany-L.-Oorpl.
