figured very well in the prize-lists, winning in
all about £30 between them. Bandsman
Mearing took the place of honour by winning

three cards-49). Corpl. Lockyer won 1st
place (£3) in the Bowyers (Snapshooting)
Competition at 300 yards with a score of 16.
Considering that at Cork we have no opportunities
for rifle practice, the competitorsespecially
the young soldiers-deserve every
.credit for their performances.

WE extend a hearty welcome to Mr. and Mrs.
John F. Shaul, who arrived here on Tuesday.
Mr. Shaul was well known to Aliwal North
residents when Band-Sergeant in the Highland
Light Infantry Regiment in 1902. After the
war (in which he gained the Victoria Cross)
he married the eldest daughter of Mr. J. J.
M'Nally,· and continued with his regiment
in Egypt and India until last year, when his
21 years' service expired and he retired with
pension. After a year's experience in commercial
work in London he decided to try
his luck in sunny South Afrioa.-From South
