charge of the training, having taken an immense
amount of trouble with them, it oertainly
looks as if we will this year reoover a great~deal
of our old reputa~ion. We have never been
in the midst of so muoh football, nor shown
anything like the form we should, since we
left Aldershot, but this year both the 1st
Eleven and the 2nd have done extremely well,
the 1st Eleven having only lost the one matchagainst
the Durham Light Infantry at Fermoy.
The Dmhams on that day undoubtedly deserved
their win, but we still flatter ourselves
we are the better team. Anyhow, let us all
hope that at the end of the season, amongst
others, we may have the Irish Army CuP in
our possession.
In November the G.O.C., 6th Division,
Major-General T. A. Motoalfe, C.B., held a
chulch parade, on which he presented Coloursergeant
Kay with his long service and good
conduot medal, on which we heartily oongratulate
him, At the same time the General
also remarked on the great help given by the
Regiment at the fires in the town of Cork, and
espeoially oongratulated the three men who
were notioed bv the oivil authorities for their
good work. •
Unfortunately, owing to the strenuous life
during the summer, and want of range a,coomodation
at COlk, we have been unable to hold
the annual Wappensohaw; nor have we been
able to play out the Company cricket, nor
have we held the usual Regimental sports.
FIRE ALARMS IN CORK.
2nd Battalion News.
SINCE cur last issue we have again settled
down to Barrack life, and started to get our
football team fit.
First leave for Officers began on the lilt of
October. Half the Battalion and the Pipes
have been (In furlough, and at present the
other half Battalion and the Band are away.
We started at the beginning of the winter
to send the Battalion bv half Battalions to
Kinsale once a month for musketlY,~ but
after November the mom'y which was to pay
for the trips was required somewhere else, and
since November no more days in the c(;untry
have taken place.
Our football team has been doing very welL
Colour-Sergeant Mauchan, who has been in
As it is not often that the Battalion fire brigade
is called out to assist at a fire in the town,
some mention ought to be made of the two
oooasions within ten days upon whioh it had
to go out.
The first took place about 1.30 p.m. on the
9th November, at the Metropole Hotel, and
hose reels and fire engine were sent down.
When we got there the diffioulty was to find
the hydrauts, but when these were eventually
discovered, and the water on, the hoses, pOUIing
water over everyone and everything they met
en route, were oauied up to the top scorey, and
there did great work. The fire engine was
playing on the back of the building, pumping
water from the livel. About 4 o'clock the fire
waR got undel, thanks in ne· small measure to
the efforts of c-urselves and the \Vf!lsh Fusiliers.
The whole of the annexe of the building was
destlOyed, but the main building was saved.
The names d three men d the Battalion were
