142 HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY CHRONICLE.
won the wooden spoon with little difficuly although,
mind you, he became a first class shot' and
he didn't fire at corn-beef cans, " Bhoy_" '
At the time of writing we have a 2nd XI. Football
League ~n ~rogress, but we are making a sorry display,
as our Jumors have been on the losing side on all
occasions, generally getting beat by a goal; but the
" captain," Stewart, says they will "break their duck,"
and win one of the remaining matches.
THREE- QUARTER.
"F" COMPANY.
THE first item of interest that occurred after the submission
of my last notes was our grim struggle with
that wonderful" New Course of Musketry." We
finished not so bad, our average of 99 being the best
up to the time we fired; but this has since been beaten
by " D" Company with 106. Pte. M'Farlane's score
(our only marksman) of 155 has not yet been beaten.
Next I come to the Inter-Company Football Cup.
In the 1st round, after a very interestiner game we
disposed of the holders (" A" Company) by'2 goals to O.
The semi-final found us against" G" Company, whom
we managed to bet by 4 goals to nil. This brought us
to meet" D" Company in the final, and as Kennedy,
our centre forward, had been admitted to hospital
we were generally expected to lose; but by a good.
if fairly lucky, effort Horsley scored the only goal of the
match, securing for " F" Company the much-coveted
cup and badges. Team-White; Gorman and Collins;
Gallacher, Horsley, and Groundwater; M'Lennon and
King, Horsley, Clayton and Champion.
In the monthly sports for June the Company showed
to very great advantage. Kane took 1st in the hurdle
race, and followed this up with 3rd in the half-mile
Corpl. Shaw gaining first place. Our guard-mounting
team (L.-Corpl. Atkins, Ptes. Mills, Wiseman, and Tait)
got first place in that competition. In the Sergeants'
race the Colour-Sergeant got third place, and" Donald "
ran a dead heat with" Jock Brown" for last. Chisholm
appeared in a new role when he secured second
place in putting the shot.
I now come to the tit-bit of the evening-namely,
the tug-of-war. "Donald" made up for his poor
display in the sergeants' race by coaching (I don't
think) our team to victory in the final. In the first
and semi-final rounds we met" K " and "I " Companies
respectively, but in neither of these pulls nor in the
final was our team brought to the centre line. This
is the third time in succession that" F" Company
has won the Inter-Company Tug-of-War, which is quite
a good performance. In the Rugby League we tied
wit.b "A" ~nd "H" Companies for third place,
whICh was qUite good for our first season at this game.
In the July sports we had not a bad share of the spoil.
We were unplaced in the relay race and the dog race;
we, however, got second in the tent striking competition.
In the hammer-throwing M'Geechan got first and Chisholm
second. In the quarter mile open to the Garrison
Corpl. Shaw secured first place and Kane got second.
The novices' 1000 yards was won by L.-Corpl. Gouldie
of " B" Company, with Moore, Dewitt, and Lorimer
of "F" Company winning the other prizes. The
Band race resulted in a win for Bandsman Horsley,
who also belongs to the Company.
As I am leaving the station shortly I will have to
hand over my notes for someone else to finish.
J. R. K.
As our correspondent has gone to form one of the
" scrum" in the Rugby team at Calcutta, I have been
asked to take over Company reporting, so prepare
for the agony. The Company, has done splendidly
since the last issue, winning the Company Football Cup.
We whacked " G" Company in the semi-final by 4.0
and "D" Company (better known as the "Silver:
smiths ") by 1-0 in the final. Now comes the tale of
the monthly sports (who said" F" Company's extra
pay day). We did splendid in the first sports.
We won five firsts, two seconds, and one third. Pte.
Kane, our timber-notcher, won the hurd.les in splendid
style from a field of about 40. L.-Corpl. Atkins (.)ur
-ightingale) :w.ith his merry men won the guard.mount.
Ing competitIOn. Corpl. Shaw won the half-mile
handicap from scratch, with Pte. Kane second off 4
yards. Piper Chisholw gave a good account of himself
in putting the shot, b~t could not beat The Douglas,
~o had to be c~mtent With second. Bandsman Horsley,
In company With Mrs. Stokey, won the nomination race.
Mrs. Stokey manipulated the needle, whilst Jock supplied
the speed part of the programme. Our Colour
Sergeant made a splendid show in the above, first
nearly.knocking the lady off the chair, and the lady
forgetting what hand she used the needle with. Well,
they were numbered amongst the "also ran." Our
Colour-Sergeant made a better show in the Sergeants'
race, getting third, being beaten only by superior speed
(but wait till he gets his 1st I). We again won the
tug-of-war. There is nothing to say about this event,
as we were scarcely stretched. Between the sports we
had a Rugby League. We finished third-not so bad
considering it was our first attempt. Better luck next
time. In the following sports our colours were again
prominent in the front, Corpl. Shaw winning the quarter
mile open to the Garrison, with Pte. Kane second.
Pte. M'Geechan won the hammer with a throw that
would have made Cameron turn pale. Piper Chisholm
was second. In the 1000 yards for novices we supplied
second, third. and fourth, the heroes being Ptes. Moore,
Jewitt. and Lorimer. Mickie said he " micht hae been
first if his biler hidna burst." Bandsman H)rsley
again gave his brother musicians a lesson on how not to
lose races, Piper Chisholm being second. We got
second in the tent-pitching-thanks to Willis' training
as a coster. We are busy in the middle of a 2nd Division
Football League, and have done well up till now, having
played 4, won 3, and lost 1. More power to your feet,
Nosey! I must close now, assuring all old Company
pals whose eyes may alight on this scroll that the Company
is in a healthy condition, and sighing for more
country to conquer.
" LIGHT BLUE."
"G" COMPANY.
IN the monthly sports for June and July our star was
not in the ascendant. Sad to relate, we were entirely
unsuccessful, with the exception of Pte. Paul's "Charlie"
winning the dog race and one of the Company punkah
coolies winning the native wrestling competition.
As foreseen in the last issue, we were not as good as
we might have been at football. After beating" F"
Company in the first round we were in turn beaten by
" F" Company in the second round, who won thl' cup
outright. The Rugb) League has come and gone,
but we are not the holders of the League, though no
fault could be found with our players, who had not
handled a rugby ball in their lives, with about two
exceptions. We are at present interested in a 2nd XI.
Football League, and we. will find, without doubt,
that we have some gooc1 players who are not included
in our Company team.
