A well-contested sprint was witnessed, and three yards separated first man from third. In connection with this event fickle Dame Rumour says of certain members of the Mess that the help of a few moonlight practice runs did not bring them in the first three. INTER-COMPANY TUG-OF-WAR (Final}.-Ist, "F" Company; 2nd, "D" Company. <strong>The</strong> first and second rounds of the Tug-of-War had been decidEd previous to the evening of the sports, and the victors were as above. 1st Round-" D" 2 pulls, " A "0; "F" 2, "K" 0 ; "I" 2, "H" 0; "G" scratched to " B." 2nd Round-" D" 2, " B" 0; "F" 2, "I" O. A 12-foot pull and the first two to win were the conditions. On a whole the pulls did not last any time, and everyone agreEd that they would sooner have preferrEd one pull of every man over. Saturday, 30th July, was the date of the Monthly Meeting, and, to the delight of ail, the monsoons, as greatly feared, did not prevent the events from taking place, as Jupiter Pluvius was considerate to us_ A more than usual attractive programme was promised, and proceEdings opened with our Dog Derby, under the auspices of our newly formed Kennel Club. 1st, ".Jolly" (Pte. Paul, "G" Company); 2nd, " Jock" (Pte. Smith, "G "); 3rd, "Kruger" (Pte. Wintrum, "I "). A large entry entailEd heats, and great amusement was causfd by witnessing the efforts of the various owners to bring their pets to the winning post. INTER-COMPANY RELAY RACE.-Ist, "K"; 2nd, "H JJ; 3rd, " D." Great merriment was the outcome of the Relay conditions, which were as follows :-Teams of 4 from each Company, which must be compOSEd as follows: I Sergt., I Corp!., I L.-Corpl., and I Pte. per Company_ <strong>The</strong> first man or N.-C.O. of each Company had to run I lap of 300 yards and send the next two off, one sitting in the barrow and the other wheeling it, until a half-way line was reached, when they reverSEd positions, and finishEd up by sending the 4th man off to run 150 yards backwards to the winning post. TENT-STRIKING COMPETITION (Company teams). 1st, "K" Company; 2nd, "F"; 3rd, " A." This was a good event, and prodUCEd a close finish, some frantic efforts of the" European ekka wallahs" being loudly appladuEd in the endeavour to bring the thoroughbrEds to the post. THROWING THE HAMMER.-Ist, Pte. M'Geachan, "F," '100 ft.; 2nd, Piper Chisholm, "F," 91 ft.; 3rd, Sergt. Lawrie, 89 ft. <strong>The</strong> majority of the entrants did not have the knack of the throw, and consequently the field thinnEd down considerably. QUARTER MILE (Open to the Garrison}.-Ist, Corpl. Shaw, H.L.I.; 2nd, Pte. Kane, H_L.I.; 3rd, Corpl. Mores, <strong>The</strong> King's Own. This was the tit-bit of the evening. Corpl. Shaw ran a well-judgEd race, and finishEd strongly with 5 yards in hand. Mention should now be made of CorpI. Shaw's achieVEments this summer in the Garrison, as he has won the Open Mile, Half Mile, and Quarter Mile. NATIVE WRESTLING.-This was an Inter-Company event amongst the Company punkah wallahs, "D" Company proving the winners, with" F" second. <strong>The</strong> troops thoroughly enjOYEd the spectacle, especially when the winners threw themselves prostrate at the judge'S feet and salaam(d time aDd again. 1000 YARDS (Novice Race}.-Ist, L.-Corpl. Goldie, " B "; 2nd, Pte. Moore, "F"; 3rd, Pte. Jewitt, "F." This was a good race, with a large entry, and the pace was fast all the way. <strong>The</strong> winner ran a splendid race. RELAY RACE (Officers v. Sergeants}.-Ist, Sergeants. 8 Sergeants v. 8 Officers was the conditions, and some good sprinting was seen, each one doing lOO yards ar.d handing a handkerchief to the next contestant. <strong>The</strong> Officers lost a lot of grourd by the handkerchief being droppEd, but at the same time the Sergeants were always masters of the contest. BAND RACE.-Ist, Bandsman Horsley; 2nd, Piper Chisholm; 3rd, Pte. M'Arthur. Although handicappEd, Horsley soon took the lead and won easily. Distance 150 yards. Worthy mention should be made of the harlequinade and acrobatic display given by Professor" Potterino " and his "death or glory pupils," who convulsed all by their antics, their equitation being excellent, with the exception of the worthy Professor. who did not relish. bare-back riding. RUGBY NOTES. UNDERNEATH is given the result of the Inter-Company Rugby League, whioh shows that for the second year in succession 'I" Company have run out winners. This year they have done even better than last, as: they not only have not dropped a point but all theteams have failEd to score against them. "D" Company also deserve great crEdit, because for both years they have been runners-up; but whereas last year they took a point from" I " Company, this year" I " secured rather a run-away victory by beating them by 17 points. " I " Company's other successes were : " A " Company, 9 points; "B" Company, scratched ;. "F" Company, 16 points; "G" Company, 16 points; and" H" Company, 5 points. <strong>The</strong>ir total, therefore • shows 63 points against nil. Pld. Won. Lost. Drn. Pts.. On the 8th we plaYEd a friendly with the Nomads and won easily by 9 points to 3. We opened our League account with the East Yorks on the lOth, but we h&d to retire defeated by 9 points to 3 after a remarkably hard game. On the 14th we plaYEd the Shropshircs, and drew an even game of 3 points each. <strong>The</strong> Saturday following saw us engagEd with the Nomads, but we droppEd an unexpectEd point by making a draw-O-O. 2ND XI. FOOTBALL LEAGUE. After the Rugby League was conclud(d we started the above, the conditions being that no player who. took part in the Cup was eligible for the League. As we send these notes the League is in an interesting state, as about three Companies think that they are going to win the Championship. As will be seen by the
