running was seen, the winners being close behind
each other.
120 Yards Flat Race.-I, Pte. M'MiIlan, A Coy. ;
2, Cp!. Clark, B Coy.; 3, L.-Cpl. Stewart, D Coy.
This event was run in fast time, and there was little
distance between all the competitors, the judges
having some difficulty in deciding the placinl!'.
Half-Mile (confined t,o Draft).-I, Pte. Horn; 2,
Pte. Lorimer ; 3, Pte. Skirling. The Draft turned
out in large numbers for this race, and they went oft'
at a quarter-mile pace, which they soon found too hot
and a tail be~an to form, The first man got a
splendid lead m the second lap and kept up a good
stride until coming into the straight; the second man
all but pulled up on him, there being only about five
yards dllference.
Veterans' Race (220 Yards Handicap)-I, Pte.
M'Cormack, H Coy; 2, Pte. M'Millan, F Coy. A
disappointing entry of two men took all the interest
out of this race, but a touay and c'ose finish was
seen, as M'Cormack, who is a noted runner in the
Battalion, was set to give M'MilIall 20 yards start.
M'Millan led all the way, until about 10 yards from
the tape, when M'Cormack overhauled him and
reached home first.
1, Pte. Kane, F Coy; 2, L. -CpI. Stewart, D Coy;
3, L.-CpI. Black, B Coy. This open event brought
out a good held, but no outsider turned up to dispute
the honour. Stewart and Kane ran well. and it was
a neck and neck race until the last two hurdles, when
Kane forged ahead and won by about six yards,
Black being close up.
Long Jump.-l, Sgt. Mackie, G Coy; 2, Pte.
Morrison, B Coy; g, Pte. Goodsman, G Coy. Sgt.
Mackie won with a bit to spare, jumping 18 ft. 7 in.,
which is extremely good for regimental sports.
each man to run 440 yards)-l, D Coy; 2, F Coy.
All the companies alld a team from the Draft faced
the starter. The first men got set agoing, and the
pace was a cracker, all coming round in a bunch,
and little distance being gained by any particular
Company. The second relal' went away like hares,
and good running was witnessed, A Coy. having a
slight lead. The third lot got set agoing. and Biggar,
of D, running splendidly, outstripped his IlIen and
gave a lexd to Stewart, the last man to run for D,
who ran a good fourth, with Kane of F Coy nearest
man to him, D Coy having over ten yards to spare at
SERGEANTS' MESS NOTES.
THE quarter has been full of incidents, but,
not being a permanent reporter, I hope any
shortcomings in the ensuing notes will be excused.
We opened the cold weather season with a
dance, which was heM on the tennis court,
We had a record attendance. and everyb~y
seemed to enjoy themselves AI. The commit·
tee spared no p"ins to. make everything comfortable
and agreeable for their guests. The
surroundings and lights on the tennis court,
where the dance was ht,ld, were quite up·todate,
and were appreciated by our guests
The dance was graced by a number of our
officers with their ladies, and "the reel,'~
their apparent speciality, was dancel~ with
much enthusiasm and was greatly admIred by
our" non.reeling guests " (~)
We regret the loss of Sergeant-Piper Taylor.
who has been invalided home.
The Dragoons have left Lucknow. Previus
to their departure they gave a dance, WhlOh
was well attended by' our members. They
have been relieved by the 8th Hussars, who
uphold the record of the 1st Royal Dragoons.
