Kneller Hall. Colonel Balfour's connection<br />

with the Regiment is now a long and a very<br />

intimate one, and readers of the" <strong>Chronicle</strong>"<br />

have reason to be particularly grateful to him<br />

as one of the "pioneers" of the Regimental<br />

magazine. Everyone will be glad to see that<br />

be has still further strengthened this connection<br />

with the H.L.I. in the younger<br />

generation.<br />

OUR ILLUSTRATIONS.<br />

AMONG our illustrations this quarter is reproduced<br />

a photoglaph, recently taken in<br />

India, of members of the 1st Battalion whose<br />

fathers (and in some cases grandfathers) served<br />

in the old 71st and 74th. We hope to supplement<br />

this by a similar photograph of those<br />

serving in the 2nd Battalion and Depot. <strong>The</strong><br />

following ate the names of those in the<br />

photograph ;­<br />

Depot Notes.<br />

ON the 27th May we had a visit of the<br />

Instructional Staff from Hythe (1 Officer and<br />

2 N.-C.O.'s). <strong>The</strong>rmometer and Hill Siffken<br />

targets were the subjects on which they<br />

dilated.<br />

A detachment of recruits under command<br />

of Captain J. J. Ronald proceeded to Tinto<br />

on tbe 18tb of June to fire 'fable A (Special<br />

Reserve). <strong>The</strong> under-mentioned Officers were<br />

included in the party :-Captain R. G. 1.<br />

Chichester, Captain Martin, Lieut. Telfer<br />

Smollett, and Lieut. Ferrers-Guy.<br />

On the 20th June a party of 21 "recruits<br />

proceeded to Cork to join the 2nd Battalion at<br />

Cork. Captain Baird was the Officer in<br />

charge. <strong>The</strong>re are at present no line recruits<br />

at the Depot. <strong>The</strong> under-mentioned are the<br />

recruits ;-11498 P. Gillespie, 11499 J. Mac­<br />

Naught, 11800 Christie, 11501 .T. Wilson,<br />

11503 J. Aitkenhead, 11504 J. Roach, 11506<br />

T. Gaw, 11507 A. Gardiner, 11508 ,J, Robertson,<br />

Stewart (Adjutant, 31 d Battalion) proceeded<br />

to Hythe on 24th May for refresher course.<br />

Lieut. A. P. D. Telfel Smollett passed for<br />

promotion, (c) Distinguished, 011 2nd June.<br />

Sergt. ,J, Taylor, late Pipe-Major, 1st<br />

Battalion, bas been transferred to 3rd Battalion<br />

as Pipe-Major in place of Sergt.-Piper<br />

M'Phee, who has been discharged on termination<br />

of his engagement.<br />

Captain C. T. Martin took over the duties<br />

of Adjutant of the 4th Battalion in March
