In particular, the study examines their discourse transcripts in terms of how these four writing students have used conferencing messages to varying degrees of success to establish a cooperative rapport, to exchange ideas, and to offer critiques of each other’s work. Stanley Harrison Our Cyberbodies, Ourselves I argue that compositionists need to become familiar with and then instruct their students in the art of freeware selection–as opposed to pay, ad, and spyware selection. This type of instruction helps both cyber-teachers and cyber-students understand that living commodities should write their cyborg bodies with freeware alternatives where possible, if only because this helps them to imagine and compose alternatives to the hegemonic subject position that the ideology of multinational capitalism privileges. 104 Computers & Writing 2001

We also illustrate what can go wrong when the etiquette rules for constructive use of backchannel discourse are breached.
