Friday 5:15 — 6:30 Session E.9 Cybercommunities and Institutions: Alienation, Collaboration, and Exclusionary Participation BC 129 Linda Calendrillo, moderator and respondent Sue Hum Cyber-Communal Identity in a Material Classroom: Fostering Collaboration While Suppressing Conflict I explore the nature and construction of cyber-communal identity, created through computer-mediated communication (CMC). I question if small group discussions that are mediated by Internet relay chat (IRC) software fosters collaboration while suppressing conflict and dissent. I describe the results of a study, using excerpts from chat logs and student questionnaires/interviews, demonstrating how students construct their identities as members of a classroom community in an online environment. Nancy Myers Acting On or Acting With: Academe’s Promotion of Exclusionary Participation in the Virtual Sphere For the last twenty years, compositionists have been actively teaching with computer technology, making composition studies the appropriate arena to address this “add on” problem. The following two ways highlight an “acting with” model of technology integration: (1) Teachers who teach in electronic classrooms need to prepare students to choose their means of participation in virtual sphere as well as to prepare them in the changing literacies, and (2) Teachers who teach in electronic classrooms need to reaffirm the democratizing aspects of virtual sphere by addressing the “add on” approach with their university colleagues. Keith Rhodes Undoing the Cybersemiotics of Alienation: Toward Cyberhuman Communities As the boundaries between real and online worlds blur and collapse, I begin by examining the logic of “alienation,” in Jameson’s sense. I argue that we need to become experts in working against cyber-alienation, which is imbued and set in motion by our choices. Next, I discuss how this logic of alienation results from cyborg life (including why it doesn’t feel alienating). 68 Computers & Writing 2001
7:00 — 11:00 Banquet Leigh Star: “The Poetics of Infrastructure” Muncie Center for the Arts Leigh Star’s (communication.ucsd.edu/ people/f_star.html) research is in the sociology of science and technology, and is especially concerned with new information technologies and life sciences. She’s a professor of library and information science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Leigh has analyzed work practices and knowledge production in a range of venues, including museums, laboratories, hospitals, libraries, and high-tech research and development sites. Her analytic approach draws on symbolic interactionism, activity theory, and feminist theory. Publications include Sorting Things Out: Classification and Its Consequences (1999), The Cultures of Computing (1995), Ecologies of Knowledge: Work and Politics in Science and Technology (1995), and Regions of the Mind: Brain Research and the Quest for Scientific Certainty (1989). Awards (To)night Best Webtext Award Kairos Kairos: A Journal for Teachers of Writing in Webbed Environments will again recognize outstanding Webtexts. Last year’s winners were Jane Love (“MOO-Scream on its wayves to WOOmb SCREAMS”) and Victor Vitanza (“CompoZing com_PLI_cating Processes”), from PRE/TEXT 3.1 (1999-2000).
