Evolution in the switchboard<br />

Earlier every sensor and actuator must be wired to an input and output of the central<br />

PLC. The result was a high wiring complexity, larger switchboards and many possibilities<br />

to make errors.<br />

Today the sensors and actuators are wired to a decentral preprocessing point and<br />

from there to the central PLC via a field Bus. The result: Reduced wiring coplexity<br />

due to decentalised inputs/outputs (I/Os) and field bus technology. The controls are<br />

distributed over the machine in several small switchboards. The number of wired inputs<br />

and outputs remains however the same. The distances between switchboards<br />

is simply bridged using field buses.<br />

Today - with easy Connect SmartWire - for example motor starters can be directly<br />

connected to the PLC and save as intelligent wiring aids not only wiring complexity<br />

but also central and decentral I/Os. Wiring errors are impossible. The inputs and outputs<br />

are placed exactly where they are required - directly on the switchgear.<br />

What is easy Connect SmartWire?<br />

SmartWire means “connect instead of wiring" and allows the connection from the<br />

switchgear (e.g. motor starter) to a PLC without the conventional control wiring. The<br />

control wiring between the PLC and the switchgear is replaced by the plug-in Smart-<br />

Wire modules and a pre-manufactured connection cable. The wiring complexity is<br />

drastically reduced and wiring errors are impossible. There are further savings also<br />

with the engineering, the commissioning and the search for faults on the machine<br />

or system. SmartWire modules can be plugged onto standard motor starter combinations<br />

that transmit the state of the contactors and the motor protection to a connected<br />

PLC and that transmit the control commands from the PLC to the contactor<br />

coils.<br />

easy Connect SmartWire gateway<br />

The gateway allows the communication between 16 SmartWire modules and easy-<br />

NET compatible or CANopen compatible <strong>PLCs</strong>. It has a pre-select switch to decide<br />

the type of operation, easy-NET or CANopen. The Gateway delivers the supply voltage<br />

for the electronic supply of the SmartWire module and for the power element<br />

of the switchgear, e.g. the contactor coil actuation. The voltage is supplied to the<br />

modules via the SmartWire connection cable.<br />
