Domestically, he f<strong>in</strong>ds it hard to conv<strong>in</strong>ce his family of his future <strong>in</strong> the music<br />

scene. His mother has been sceptical about his <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> music, press<strong>in</strong>g for him<br />

to f<strong>in</strong>d a job with a more stable career. S<strong>in</strong>ce recently perform<strong>in</strong>g at his uncle’s<br />

wedd<strong>in</strong>g and see<strong>in</strong>g some of his group’s performances, her attitude is less negative,<br />

especially with the impend<strong>in</strong>g release of fellow crew member Shaun’s solo album.<br />

X is twenty-one years old liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Mowbray, hav<strong>in</strong>g spent most of his life <strong>in</strong><br />

Gugulethu. He left Gugulethu due ma<strong>in</strong>ly to social pressures and the poverty<br />

surround<strong>in</strong>g him, both out <strong>in</strong> the streets and his home environment. He had lived<br />

<strong>in</strong> a small over-crowded house, with a complete lack of privacy.<br />

“And besides that it’s more poverty like poverty <strong>in</strong> the streets like everybody<br />

tryna get everybody tryna get someth<strong>in</strong>g / and when there’s noth<strong>in</strong>g at all /<br />

they end up gonna start eat<strong>in</strong>g each other because there is noth<strong>in</strong>g to get.”<br />

His decision to move out followed the murder of a friend and fellow group member<br />

<strong>in</strong> Gugulethu. Mov<strong>in</strong>g away gave him the opportunity to f<strong>in</strong>d himself; he felt he<br />

needed to become somebody, though he did not quite know how he was go<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

achieve this. He listened to hip <strong>hop</strong>, and began to th<strong>in</strong>k that if he could surround<br />

himself with<strong>in</strong> the hip <strong>hop</strong> culture, this could be the way to realis<strong>in</strong>g himself.<br />

At present he is study<strong>in</strong>g mercantile law. He dropped out of high school, th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the education be<strong>in</strong>g offered was irrelevant for what he wanted from life, even though<br />

he was not sure <strong>in</strong> himself what it was he was look<strong>in</strong>g for. Later he attended<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess school.<br />

He started listen<strong>in</strong>g to rap music <strong>in</strong> 1996, especially 2Pac. Later, he discovered<br />

more artists and became attracted to the whole hip <strong>hop</strong> culture. At fifteen he<br />

started writ<strong>in</strong>g his own material and became a member of the U.N.I.C. group. He<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ds hip <strong>hop</strong> an escape, offer<strong>in</strong>g a stage from which to express his feel<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

At home, his mother was not enthusiastic about his passion for hip <strong>hop</strong>, hav<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

prejudice aga<strong>in</strong>st rap music with the op<strong>in</strong>ion that all rappers were cont<strong>in</strong>ually us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bad language, and that her son wished to portray himself as a gangster. She is now<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g to respect what he has achieved, appreciat<strong>in</strong>g the effort he has put <strong>in</strong>to his<br />

musical talent, and enjoys hear<strong>in</strong>g people praise his performances.<br />

El N<strong>in</strong>o is twenty-one years old and has lived <strong>in</strong> Gugulethu all his life. He is a<br />

founder member of the Driemanskap group, established alongside Bad Luck and<br />

another person <strong>in</strong> 2001. In 2003 Redondo jo<strong>in</strong>ed the group replac<strong>in</strong>g the third<br />

member who had left. The name Driemanskap, an Afrikaans word, came about<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g a freestyle session they were hav<strong>in</strong>g. They thought it sounded good, and
