cross<strong>in</strong>g people make use of another group’s language or code. Cross<strong>in</strong>g is speak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through the <strong>identity</strong> of somebody else. If we apply this <strong>in</strong>formation to the data that<br />

have been collected, it becomes clear our <strong>in</strong>terviewees do the same th<strong>in</strong>g. By codeswitch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>to hip <strong>hop</strong> slang, they actually make use of words that rather ‘belong’ to<br />

African-American people, more specifically to African-Americans that are active
