already been spellbound by his hip <strong>hop</strong> DJ skills. It is his op<strong>in</strong>ion that children<br />
should not be told what they can not do, and any messages to them should be put<br />
across <strong>in</strong> an enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g way.<br />
Emile YX? is a found<strong>in</strong>g member of the renowned hip <strong>hop</strong> group Black Noise. Born<br />
Emile Lester Jansen <strong>in</strong> 1968 <strong>in</strong> Grassy Park, Cape Flats, he grew up <strong>in</strong> the<br />
apartheid era. At the age of fourteen he became active <strong>in</strong> the hip <strong>hop</strong> scene as b-boy<br />
(breakdancer) for the Pop Glide Crew. Black Noise have released seven CD’s to date,<br />
and Emile YX? has one solo album (‘Who am I’) to his name. The group have toured<br />
Africa, Europe and the United States of America. Dur<strong>in</strong>g his life he has met some<br />
legendary personalities with<strong>in</strong> the hip <strong>hop</strong> world: Afrika Bambaata, DJ Kool Herc<br />
and Chuck D of Public Enemy, to name but a few.<br />
He was a qualified teacher for three years, but decided he could educate to a wider<br />
audience through hip <strong>hop</strong>. He is the founder of numerous projects and events, such<br />
as ‘Heal the Hood Project’, ‘African <strong>Hip</strong> Hop Indaba’, ‘African Battle Cry’, and ‘Shut<br />
Up Just Dance’. In 1990 he published the first edition of ‘Da Juice <strong>Hip</strong> Hop and<br />
Youth Magaz<strong>in</strong>e’, directed towards educat<strong>in</strong>g young people the elements of hip <strong>hop</strong><br />
culture and politics <strong>in</strong> general.<br />
Mr. Fat (real name Ashley Titus) is an MC for Brasse Vannie Kaap, a Cape Town<br />
based rap group, with <strong>in</strong>ternational acclaim. They have released five albums to<br />
date, the most recent be<strong>in</strong>g ‘Ysterbek’. They have performed at the Pukkelpop<br />
festival and <strong>in</strong> the Vooruit concert hall here <strong>in</strong> Belgium.<br />
Born <strong>in</strong> 1974, he grew up dur<strong>in</strong>g the apartheid period. He recalls sitt<strong>in</strong>g school<br />
exams, while armed soldiers were stand<strong>in</strong>g outside the classroom. He started<br />
rapp<strong>in</strong>g at thirteen and was heavily <strong>in</strong>fluenced by Run DMC. He currently lives <strong>in</strong><br />
Bonteheuwel, Cape Flats and commits himself to his music and projects which help<br />
to uplift the local community and the young people liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the <strong>township</strong>s.<br />
2. A brief overview of the history of apartheid<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce the apartheid era is one of the most important issues that characterise South<br />
Africa’s past, present and possibly also future, it is necessary to give an overview of<br />
this period. Although apartheid was officially abolished <strong>in</strong> 1994 and South Africa is<br />
now referred to as the ‘Ra<strong>in</strong>bow Nation’, the aftermath is still very much apparent<br />
<strong>in</strong> daily life. All of our <strong>in</strong>terviewees grew up <strong>in</strong> the circumstances of be<strong>in</strong>g coloured<br />
or black dur<strong>in</strong>g a time when it was not ‘favourable’ to be so. Now, the colour of
