38. Report of the Methodist Missionary Society Working Party Britain will become the successor body to the Methodist Missionary Society. 5. Assets 5.1 All fixed assets traditionally belonging to the Methodist Missionary Society have previously been transferred to either the Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes or the Methodist Missionary Trust Association as custodian trustees. Funds have been transferred into the ‘restricted’ World Mission Fund. These funds and assets can only be used for work relating to world mission activities. (See SO 362 (2)). The closure of the Methodist Missionary Society will not affect the ring-fenced nature of these funds and assets, which will continue to be shown in the full accounts of the Methodist Church in Great Britain. 5.2 It should be noted that the World Mission Fund is, and will remain, the recipient fund for legacies and assets given to The Methodist Missionary Society (see 4.6 above). 5.3 The Methodist Missionary Trust Association will remain a custodian trustee body in respect of assets and property until such time as it is appropriate to wind up its operations. At this point consequential changes to the Deed of Union will be required. 6. Towards One Mission 6.1 With clear strategic planning the Methodist Church is in a unique place in its history to re-envisage how it moves forward in one mission. Changes in children’s and youth work, the growth of Fresh Expressions and an increasingly multicultural context are some of the exciting challenges to our understanding of mission. Closer working relationships across the Connexional Team and the church should mean that mission and evangelism can be viewed holistically with less division between them and bringing together traditional 'home' and 'overseas' mission work. While ensuring the correct use of the two funds (World Mission Fund and Mission in Britain Fund) joint working to take forward the reality of One Mission should be possible. 6.2 The Conference is advised that a communications strategy is being developed to ensure that the winding up of the Methodist Missionary Society is not perceived by members of the Methodist Church in Britain, Ireland or Partner Churches, as the ending of mission work either at home or overseas. 6.3 Arising from the discussions of the Working Party, a document based on the Future Mission Together Report, entitled ‘One Mission’, has been prepared and is offered to the Church as a resource which, it is hoped, will, in addition to the full report, act as a stimulus to further theological and ecclesiological reflection on the heart of the concept that ‘all mission is one’. 432 Conference Agenda 2013

ONE MISSION A world transformed by God’s love; a confident Church motivated to share God’s love; a people celebrating being part of a worldwide family. ●● ●● ●● ●● Participation in God’s mission and the proclamation of God’s kingdom are at the heart of Jesus’ message and continue to be empowered by the Holy Spirit’s activity in the Church and in the world. Every Methodist is called to share in this mission, working together in cooperation, partnership and collaboration wherever they are. Sharing God’s mission embraces and unites social action and evangelical proclamation as good news for all people in every aspect of their being. It is through that mission that God will enable holiness, transforming lives, communities, nations and the world. God’s mission is expressed both locally and globally and the Methodist Church in Britain celebrates being in partnership with the worldwide community of Methodist, United and ●● Uniting Churches. Mission at home and overseas is all one mission. The Purposes for Mission in the Methodist Church in Britain in the twenty-first century include: To invite and call all people to discipleship, evangelism and service by: ●● ●● ●● ●● Proclaiming and affirming our conviction of God’s love in Christ, for us and for all the world. Fulfilling the call of God to be a good neighbour to all. Creating opportunities to serve God in ways that support community development and challenge unjust structures and systems. Encouraging fresh ways of being church. To equip and resource people for mission by: ●● ●● ●● Building confidence in British Methodists as disciples of Jesus so that we rediscover a passion for mission and evangelism. Encouraging a new generation to tell its faith story by focusing on explicit and intentional voicing of the Gospel.
