38. Report of the Methodist Missionary Society Working Party ●● Encouraging and supporting British Methodists to live on a world map and to be disciples in a worldwide Church. To encourage and participate in networks of Church to Church relationships by: ●● ●● ●● ●● ●● Engaging with Churches across the world in a spirit of partnership, collaboration and mutuality; giving and receiving inspiration, challenges and resources. Sharing experiences, insights and best practice of mission with partners at home and overseas so that we all learn from each other. Fostering ecumenical links in mission, including the World Methodist Council. Contributing to and shaping a common response to global mission with our Methodist, United and Uniting partners. Facilitating encounters between people across denominational, national and cultural boundaries that enrich the Church at every level. 6.4 There is further work that needs to be carried out to ensure the full integration of the work of the Methodist Missionary Society into the life of the church and the full implementation of the underlying principles and understanding of mission embodied in the Future Mission Together Report. Some of that further work may involve structural change, in particular to strengthen and continue to ensure the close working relationship of the British and Irish Connexions as well as with Partner Churches across the world. Equally it will be important to communicate effectively our belief that there is but one mission; that mission is God’s to be exercised through us, God’s people, both locally and globally, in Britain and across the world. To this end the Conference is invited to permit the working party, with a revised membership, title and redefined remit to continue its work for one further year to bring a final report to the 2014 Conference. The proposed One Mission Working Party will explore and follow up the suggestions agreed by the Methodist Council (MC/13/36). The Group will seek feedback from stakeholders of the Methodist Church in Britain, the Methodist Church in Ireland and with Partner Churches as it draws its conclusions and proposes its final resolutions to the 2014 Conference. It is important to note that any group, committee or structure established would not be responsible for strategy, staffing or budgets. It would support the work thus enabling the Church to continue to discuss, develop and feed into One Mission ideas and concepts. It must not be, or become, a burden to operational tasks. 6.5 The terms of reference of the One Mission Working Party would be as follows; 434 Conference Agenda 2013
38. Report of the Methodist Missionary Society Working Party i. To bring about the full integration of the One Mission concept into, and its implementation throughout, all levels of the church. ii. To make specific recommendations to the 2014 Conference as to how One Mission is overseen, promoted, held accountable and embedded into the life of the Methodist people and the Methodist Church in Britain. iii. To recommend to the 2014 Conference changes to Standing Orders including a new Part within Standing Orders to incorporate One Mission. iv. To support relevant Connexional Team staff as they continue to educate, communicate and encourage Methodists throughout the Connexion, enabling a better understanding and practice of One Mission. 7 Conclusion 7.1 Perhaps for the first time in our recent history there is the real possibility of bringing the strands of overseas and home missions together. Without contradicting the terms of use for the restricted World Mission or the Mission in Britain funds, we have a unique opportunity to assert the understanding that the mission of the Church is one in which work at home and overseas is essentially the same mission. One Mission expresses the intention to work with partners, at home and across the world, to engage with God in this mission. The work of the All Partners Consultation in 2010 took the British Methodist Church further in our thinking about mission in the twenty-first century than we had dared to hope. Now is the time to move those thoughts into action as we continue to grow as a worldwide family transformed by God’s love. ***RESOLUTIONS 38/1. The Conference receives the report. 38/2. The Conference encourages Methodist people to engage with Churches across the world, in a spirit of partnership, collaboration and mutuality, through prayer, the interchange of personnel and through continuing support for the World Mission Fund and the Mission in Britain Fund. 38/3.
