55. Methodist Forces Board Contact Name and Details The Revd Robert Jones Secretary to the Methodist Forces Board. jonesr@methodistchurch.org.uk 1. The Methodist Forces Board continues to support Forces Chaplains from the three services as the core activity with a number of other activities undertaken by the Board in support of our chaplains. 2. The Board reports that we have held overall numbers very well. Currently we have 28 ordained commissioned chaplains across all 3 services drawn from the Methodist Church in Britain and Ireland and from other denominations within the wider Methodist family. This includes a serving chaplain from the Fijian Methodist Church, two from the Church of the Nazarene and four from the Irish Conference, all of whom are Recognised and Regarded to serve as Methodist chaplains. 3. The tempo of operations continues to be high and Methodist chaplains have played their full part with deployment to Afghanistan. This has included in recent times, the Revds Richard Rowe (RN), Albert Jackson (Army) and currently Dawn Colley (RAF). In 2012, the Secretary of the Board also visited Camp Bastion as part of a group of ecumenical representatives of the Sending Churches. 4. The Secretary and Chair of the Board were pleased to accompany the President of the Conference, the Revd Dr Mark Wakelin when he visited the Royal Navy at Portsmouth and HMS Victory. 5. The Forces chaplains were pleased to welcome the President to the Tri-Service Chaplains Conference at Amport House and were grateful for the time he was able to spend with them over two days. 6. In recent years, there have been a steady number of candidates and a good success rate at the point of officer selection. Overall we believe that we have a recruitment rate about equal to the rate of attrition as chaplains leave the service and return to other ministries. 7. From the perspective of the three services, the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force all see recruitment as a critical priority. Despite ongoing and far-reaching financial austerities there is still a need for recruitment for chaplaincy. Indeed, to meet natural retirement processes in the present phase, recruitment will need to be at an annual rate approaching 35 chaplains each year across all services and denominations and the 3 services are anxious that the Methodist Church plays a full part. 55. Methodist Forces Board Methodist Forces Board, comprise about 10% of the full complement which is the largest denominational Free Church presence. If we are to maintain that commitment, we may need to recruit for commissioned chaplains at a higher level than we are presently achieving and the Board continues to review how that may be achieved. 8. The Secretary of the Board is a member of the Tri-Service Interdenominational Advisory Group (TRIAG) and plays a full part in developing ecumenical relationships which will make the recruitment process more effective. 9. The Forces Board is pleased to report that the Revd Alastair Bissell has been appointed Principal Chaplain, Church of Scotland and Free Churches for the RAF. 10. The Forces Board continues to sponsor local projects which work with and support forces chaplaincies. These presently number three: a) Aldershot Garrison – a project working with schools, families, children and young people connected to Army personnel. b) Faslane - HMS Neptune: the Backchat project works with children and young people in Helensburgh. reconfigured programme of activities under the umbrella of the chaplaincy for those in the second phase of training. The Project Workers, Penny Thorne and Susie Templeton have played a full and exciting part in redeveloping this project. 11. The Board has put in places resources to support one day/ one week/one off projects for all chaplains and this is beginning to help some interesting developments. 12. Both the Forces Board Fund and the Aldershot Methodist Military Trust Fund are now relatively healthy and stable. 13. The Forces Board continues to offer support for forces personnel and civilians who work for the military overseas, in their training as Local Preachers. Developments in Local Preacher Training will help that process. 14.
