39. Managing Trustees of Central Hall Westminster Contact Name and Details 1. Introduction The Revd Michaela Youngson Chair of the Managing Trustees michaela@methodistlondon.org.uk church family alike. This report from the Managing Trustees gives an overview of the varied activities and events which have been part of the life of the Methodist Central Hall Westminster during 2012/13. The Church and the Conference Centre reach out to a vast number of residents and workers in London and the South East, as well as to visitors. This year Methodist Central Hall has celebrated 100 years of mission and service. The centenary theme; ‘Rejoicing, Remembering and Renewing’ was worked out through a range of worship, social and public events. 2. Ministry of the Church 2.1 The team ministry, led by the Superintendent Minister, the Revd Martin Turner, has the support and loyalty of church officers and other volunteers in carrying out a diverse range of tasks. A central focus and meeting point for the congregation is Sunday morning worship, where the newly refurbished organ graces the Great Hall both in sound and sight. 2.2 The pastoral work of the church is led by Deacon Denise Creed, who offers and coordinates care for church members and those in our extended 2.3 Work amongst children and young people continues in strength. All-Age worship services, held quarterly and led by the Revd Tony Miles, are a welcome feature of Sunday morning worship. “The Sanctuary”- a creative contemporary worship service meets on Thursdays and includes members who have volunteered to assist at a winter night shelter run by Westminster Churches Together. 2.4 Our Healing Ministry, under the leadership of the Revd Peter Edwards, has grown to such an extent that the regular monthly evening services have now moved from the Chapel back up into the Great Hall. 250 people attended this year’s Healing Conference. Discussion and training material on the ministry of healing is being developed as a resource for the Connexion. Peter Edwards has now joined Martin Turner in the weekly Premier Radio broadcasts, “God’s Healing Love”. 2.5 The midweek service for local workers continues to grow under the leadership of the Revd Gordon Newton. 2.6 As part of our serving the local community in Westminster, twice a 440 Conference Agenda 2013
39. Managing Trustees of Central Hall Westminster month a Drop In Centre is held for those who are living with mental illness. This is in conjunction with the Revd Neil Bunker, local Anglican chaplain for the mentally unwell. A new project is a monthly Drop In Centre for people with Parkinson's and their carers - run in conjunction with NHS Parkinson's Nurse, Lorraine Savory. 2.7 St Vincent’s Family Project, established with the Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul, continues to meet in the extended community suite at Central Hall. 2.8 Chaplaincy continues to play an important part of the work, with Martin Turner as chaplain to the Methodist Parliamentary Fellowship, Tony Miles as Media Chaplain and Denise Creed as Chaplain to the St Vincent Family Project. 2.9 A key role for the Church at Methodist Central Hall is acting as a facilitator for events led by a whole range of different ministries and charities, thus the building is used to serve the London District, the Connexion and the wider Christian community. 2.10 Westminster Women’s Outreach had its fourth successful conference in April, as part of the Church’s Centenary celebrations. The theme for this well attended event was ‘Women’s Voices’ and a range of speakers and performers enabled an engaging and powerful day. 2.11 The Trust is delighted to host this year’s Methodist Conference and hopes that representatives and visitors to the Conference are able to experience something of the hospitality and vibrancy of the Central Hall. The Conference Centre 3.1 Mr Paul Southern, Managing Director, leads the Conference Centre team as it works tirelessly to market the facilities of Central Hall at a time when all such centres have suffered from the down-turn in the economy. Bookings continue steadily but are often made at very short notice, so the team has to be very flexible as it maintains the excellence of service that an even more demanding client base expects at Central Hall at an even more reduced rate. 3.2 The commercial business unit has been preparing, updating and becoming more efficient over the last 12 months. It has assessed the potential markets and how Central Hall is perceived. Following this assessment many of the old membership groups were ’dropped‘and Central Hall declined to attend some of the traditional exhibitions in favour of new and more innovative marketing opportunities which included an ever evolving website including new video footage and “Google Street view”. This allows visitors to walk into Central Hall through the website. The business unit also exhibited at the centre of Conference Agenda 2013 441
