42. Ministries Committee Contact Name and Details The Revd Leo Osborn Chair of the Ministries Committee leo.osborn@talk21.com Subject and Aims Report on the work of the Committee in 2012/13 1. Introduction 1.1 The Ministries Committee has met five times (once residentially) since the 2012 Conference. Earlier meetings were taken up with both governance and oversight issues until the Implementation Management Team and Implementation Executive had been established and the Discipleship and Ministries Learning Network (DMLN) had begun to take shape following the resolutions of 2012 Conference in response to The Fruitful Field Project report. The Committee was particularly grateful for the wisdom and skill of the consultants who advised them and to Siôn Rhys-Evans for his expertise and support. During the latter part of the year, the Committee has been more able to concentrate on oversight matters particularly in relation to ministerial formation, both in commissioning work and receiving reports on work undertaken. This report focuses on the progress made in respect of developing learning and training of lay people and ministers in response to the Fruitful Field report. Other aspects of the implementation of the resolutions of the 2012 Conference are presented within the Discipleship and Ministries Learning Network report to the Conference. 1.2 Much work has begun in a number of important areas that had been previously highlighted as crucial and, whilst issues relating to initial ministerial formation are important, the Committee would, through this report, want to respectfully remind the Conference and the wider Connexion that the Fruitful Field is about a great deal more than that. It is about formation, learning, training, theological education, scholarship, research and development. It is about the future of the Methodist Church’s connexional learning resources. It is about equipping the Methodist Church and its ministries in all of its contexts and formational communities, and equipping God’s people for discipleship and mission. Members of the Conference are warmly invited to attend the two workshops arranged under the auspices of the Ministries Committee around pathways for Local Preachers and Worship Leaders and local pastoral ministry and to offer input into this ongoing work. The members of the Committee continue to be grateful to the Conference for entrusting them with the privilege of helping form disciples of Jesus and thank you for your continuing prayers. 472 Conference Agenda 2013

Fresh Expressions, the Fresh Ways Practitioners’ Forum and VentureFX 2.1 The 2007 Conference affirmed and encouraged the priority of developing fresh ways of being church and the many and various ways in which this priority is being taken forward in the life of the Connexion. The 2009 Conference reaffirmed this for Phase 2 of the Fresh Expressions initiative and directed the Methodist Council to bring annual reports to the Conference from 2008 to 2013 detailing progress made in encouraging the priority of developing fresh ways of being church and with detailed guidance on how this can be further encouraged including any necessary changes to Standing Orders. This section comprises the fourth of these reports. 2.2 The 2012 Conference passed resolution 52/1 (Fresh Ways Working Group: The Future), thereby receiving the report and adopting the recommendations set out in paragraphs 5.1 – 5.3 approving the changes necessary for work to develop and respond to growth in the life of the Connexion. The following sections detail the respective developments of this work. Fresh Ways Practitioners’ Forum 2.3 The Fresh Ways Working Group was a Conference-appointed group, formed in the wake of the Mission Shaped Church Report, tasked with helping the Conference (through its various decision-making bodies) to respond to the developing ‘fresh ways’ of being a growing church in the twenty first century. It has undergone an informal review, and this year, following the decisions of the Conference, has evolved into a Practitioners’ Forum. 2.4 The aim of the Fresh Ways Practitioners’ Forum (hereafter Forum) is to enable practitioners from a variety of fields to join together for the mutual benefit of their ministry and the work of the wider Connexion. It is a dialogical meeting point for those involved in various aspects of the Church's life in the UK. The Forum seeks to enable theological reflection on aspects of ministry and mission from and by practitioners across the country. 2.5 Practitioners are invited to attend a regular Forum meeting on the following criteria, either through self selection, or through recommendation by a Chair of District. ●● ●● ●● ●● Members of the former Fresh Ways Working Group, the Connexional Team or the Fresh Expressions Team District Officers with a Fresh Ways remit Those leading large congregations with a membership over 200 Those leading an inherited Conference Agenda 2013 473
