Meet the<br />

FEDERAL PRESIDENT<br />

Commander F. G. Evans first became associated with<br />

the <strong>Navy</strong> <strong>League</strong> Sea Cadets in 1948 and became Deputy<br />

State Commandant in Victoria, and also a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

State Executive Committee <strong>of</strong> the <strong>League</strong>.<br />

He was actively involved in the reorganisation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Sea Cadet movement<br />

in the early "fifties and the<br />

formation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Australia</strong>n Sea<br />

Cadet Corps as it is today<br />

Commander Evans was Commanding<br />

Officer <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />

Contingent at the Empire Sea Cadet<br />

Training Course in England in 1952.<br />

and was appointed Senior Officer <strong>of</strong><br />

the Victorian Division in 1953.<br />

He has been a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Federal Council <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Navy</strong> <strong>League</strong><br />

and the Sea Cadet Council since they<br />

were first formed, and was elected<br />

President <strong>of</strong> the Victorian Division<br />

in 1967<br />

Commander Evans was a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Sea Cadet Rationalisation<br />

Committee which reported on the<br />

Sea Cadet organisation in the late<br />

nineteen sixties. This report was subsequently<br />

accepted by the Naval<br />

Board and is in the process <strong>of</strong> implementation<br />

at the present time.<br />

Commander Evans manages his<br />

family's business in Melbourne, but<br />

in between times served as A.D.C. to<br />

the Governor <strong>of</strong> Victoria (the late Sir<br />

Dallas Brooks) in 1956. and as<br />

Private Secretary in 1962-3.<br />

Following his election as Federal<br />

President late last year. Commander<br />

Evans called on the Governor-General<br />

on Monday. 23 January<br />

and also held discussions with the<br />

Chief <strong>of</strong> Naval Staff. Vice Admiral Sir<br />

Richard Peek; the Chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Sir Victor Smith and on Tuesday<br />

morning, the Secretary <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Navy</strong>. Mr.<br />

Landau.<br />

Opportunity was also taken to<br />

discuss <strong>Navy</strong> <strong>League</strong> and Sea Cadet<br />

affairs with the Director <strong>of</strong> Naval<br />

Reserves. Captain B. L. Cleary. the<br />

President <strong>of</strong> the A.C.T. Division <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Navy</strong> <strong>League</strong>. Commander John<br />

Howse. The President was also able<br />

to meet Dr. T. B. Millar. Fellow in<br />

International Relations. Strategic<br />

and Defence Studies Centre. <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />

National University — the<br />

author <strong>of</strong> several books and papers<br />

on <strong>Australia</strong>n Defence.<br />

called on Rear Admiral Graham. Flag<br />

Officer Commanding East <strong>Australia</strong><br />

Area and also contacted Rear Admiral<br />

H. A. Showers. President <strong>of</strong> the<br />

New South Wales Division <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Navy</strong> <strong>League</strong>.<br />
