WAR COLLEGES VISIT<br />
Representatives from the United<br />
States and Korean War Colleges and<br />
the Defence College <strong>of</strong> Thailand<br />
have visited <strong>Australia</strong> in recent<br />
months.<br />
The 38 staff and faculty students<br />
from the United States National War<br />
College were led by Rear Admiral<br />
Percival W Jackson.<br />
The U.S National War College was<br />
established in 1946. It is a top-level<br />
inter-service college for senior military<br />
<strong>of</strong>ficers and civilian career<br />
<strong>of</strong>ficials. The College functions<br />
under the supervision <strong>of</strong> the<br />
American Joint Chiefs <strong>of</strong> Staff and is<br />
the senior service school in the field<br />
<strong>of</strong> politico-military affairs. Other<br />
groups from the College are visiting<br />
countries in the Middle East. Africa<br />
and Latin America. These visits are<br />
an integral part <strong>of</strong> the college curriculum<br />
and permit first-hand observation<br />
by the students <strong>of</strong> conditions<br />
in various parts <strong>of</strong> the world in<br />
preparation for their future duties.<br />
On return to the National War<br />
College, each <strong>of</strong> the groups report to<br />
the College as a whole on their tour.<br />
The 11-member party from the<br />
Korean National War College arrived<br />
m <strong>Australia</strong> on 10 <strong>May</strong> for a four-day<br />
visit, as part <strong>of</strong> a tour <strong>of</strong> the Asian<br />
and Pacific region.<br />
The students were senior <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />
from the Korean Army and Air Force<br />
and Government agencies and were<br />
led by Brigadier-General Kim Joon.<br />
Director <strong>of</strong> Instruction<br />
They were given National briefings<br />
on <strong>Australia</strong>n Defence and Foreign<br />
Affairs policy by Government <strong>of</strong>ficials<br />
in Canberra and then visited<br />
Army and industrial establishments<br />
in Sydney.<br />
The College was established in<br />
1955. and is the top^evel interservice<br />
college in Korea.<br />
The College is responsible to the<br />
Minister for Defence and is the<br />
In this capacity Mr Jockel will be<br />
Chairman <strong>of</strong> the National Intelligence<br />
Committee which is responsible<br />
to the Defence Committee for<br />
the production <strong>of</strong> national intelsenior<br />
school in the field <strong>of</strong> politicomilitary<br />
affairs.<br />
The 21 representatives from the<br />
National Defence College <strong>of</strong> Thailand<br />
visited <strong>Australia</strong> during the<br />
period 15-23 <strong>May</strong>. and were led by<br />
Major-General Chantrakupt Sirisuth.<br />
They also were briefed on <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />
foreign, defence and trade<br />
policy.<br />
SOLD FOR SCRAP<br />
Two former R.A.N, warships were<br />
towed from Sydney Harbour during<br />
<strong>Apr</strong>il. The photograph shows the<br />
Japanese tug. in the centre the<br />
former H.M.A.S Quiberon and at<br />
right. H.M.A.S. Tobruk. Both vessels<br />
were bought for scrap by the Fugila<br />
Salvage Company.<br />
ROYAL NAVY SUBMARINE<br />
The Royal <strong>Navy</strong> Oberon-class submarine<br />
H.M.S. Odin will join the First<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n Submarine Squadron in<br />
November/December. <strong>1972</strong>. She will<br />
be manned by a Royal <strong>Navy</strong> crew and<br />
will remain an R.N. vessel. Her presence<br />
will facilitate R.A.N, submarine<br />
and fleet training and she will<br />
take turns with the R.A.N, s four<br />
Oberon-class submarines in meeting<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>'s commitment to<br />
the ANZUK forces based in Singapore.<br />

INTELLIGENCE ORGANISATION<br />
Mr G. A. Jockel. C.B.E . who<br />
recently returned from an assignment<br />
in Indonesia as Ambassador,<br />
has been appointed by the Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> Defence to succeed Mr R w.<br />
Furlonger as Director <strong>of</strong> the Joint<br />
Intelligence Organisation (J.1.0.) in<br />
Canberra.<br />
