exercise employing a sea-mobile<br />

military base.<br />

The exercise involved an assault<br />

on a ground target by ship-borne<br />

troops landed from helicopters. The<br />

target was a supposed radar station<br />

in the Beecr<strong>of</strong>t Range area at the<br />

entrance to Jervis Bay<br />

Troops embarked in H.M.A.S.<br />

Sydney were flown by helicopter to<br />

ground positions near the target<br />

The exercise was intended to<br />

practice the Service elements in<br />

loint-service co-operation, amphibious<br />

reconnaissance, air mobile<br />

raiding and casualty evacuation.<br />

H.M.A.S. VAMPIRE REJOINS<br />

FLEET<br />

H.M.A.S. Vampire rejoined the <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />

Fleet during the first weekend<br />

in <strong>Mar</strong>ch, following a $10 million<br />

refit. Our photograph shows her<br />

demonstrating her new gunnery<br />

prowess.<br />

The refit, carried out at Williamstown<br />

Naval Dockyard, included new<br />

superstructure. new electronic<br />

equipment and three new turrets,<br />

each mounting two 4.5-inch guns,<br />

the latest fire-control systems, radar<br />

and navigation equipment.<br />

Her sister ship. H.M.A.S. Vendetta,<br />

is now undergoing a similar refit at<br />

Williamstown and is expected back<br />

in service early next year<br />

Divercom underwater communications<br />

systems and 10 surface units<br />

for use by the Royal <strong>Australia</strong>n <strong>Navy</strong><br />

has been lodged with Bendix Corporation's<br />

Electrodynamics Division.<br />

California, through the Bendix Corporation<br />

<strong>Australia</strong> Pty. Ltd. This<br />

newly developed underwater<br />

acoustics communication system<br />

permits a diver to speak and receive,<br />

send code or transmit a steady<br />

homing signal to another similarly<br />

equipped diver, submersible or<br />

surface vessel.<br />
