Weekend Training and other activities carried out by the Naval Reserve Cadets in New South<br />

Continuous training at sea was carried out in H.M.AS MELBOURNE from 16 to 23 January tor<br />

18 members and from 24 to 27 <strong>Mar</strong>ch in H.M.A.S. SYDNEY for 30 members<br />

On the acquisition <strong>of</strong> the hulk<br />

Launceston unit <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />

Sea Cadet Corps, celebrates the<br />

twentieth anniversary <strong>of</strong> its entry<br />

into the Corps. The Launceston<br />

Company <strong>of</strong> the then <strong>Navy</strong> <strong>League</strong><br />

Sea Cadet Corps had its beginnings<br />

in November 1951 when a meeting<br />

between Commander Shaw RAN<br />

(Naval Officer in Charge. Tasmania).<br />

Mr 6. Cutts and Mr W<br />

Sr'inger agreed to form the company<br />

Originally it was known as T.S<br />

Launceston. Preparations and<br />

recruitment went on until late in<br />

January 1952 when the unit had its<br />

first meeting in Mr Springer's<br />

loi.nge with 35 cadets Mr Cutts<br />

became Lieutenant Cutts and Commanding<br />

Officer and Mr Springer<br />

was 1st Lieutenant with the rank <strong>of</strong><br />

Sub-Lieutenant<br />

Parades were held at Patons &<br />

Baldwin s hall for nearly two years.<br />

In 1953 the unit was judged the best<br />

Alvina. Saturday parades were held<br />

on board her. and Friday night<br />

parades'were held at nearby Paterson<br />

Barracks, the C M F Depot<br />
