In 1958 an old sawmill complex<br />

was purchased by a local business<br />

club and renovated for their<br />

premises. A large space that they<br />

were unable to use was <strong>of</strong>fered to<br />

the unit. It was upstairs, approximately<br />

40 ft. by 40 ft. and covered<br />

with rubbish and sawdust six<br />

inches deep! However, the cadets<br />

set to work and the space was<br />

cleaned, painted and sub-divided<br />

into stores, galley etc This was<br />

moved into on the night <strong>of</strong> our<br />

Annual Inspection by Captain<br />

Saturday parades were still being<br />

earned out on board Alvina.<br />

Restoration work was being carried<br />

out here also, and a 32-volt lighting<br />

plant was wired in at this time In<br />

January. 1958 a crew <strong>of</strong> 23 cadets<br />

under Sub-Lieutenant A. Cleaver<br />

went to Ballarat for 12 day . raising<br />

the money themselves<br />

Vandals had by this time turned<br />

their attentions to the Alvina to such<br />

an extent that finally she went to the<br />

breakers in 1961. In 1960 a cadet<br />

was sent to the Empire Camp in New<br />

Zealand. Also the foundations were<br />

laid for our own hall, but no funds<br />

were available to commence building.<br />

In 1963 the owners <strong>of</strong> the unit<br />

headquarters sold out and the unit<br />

was forced to move Accommodation<br />

was found temporarily in a<br />

vacant woolstore in William Street<br />

This was headquarters for<br />

approximately nine months until it<br />

was required for the wool season.<br />

The unit was temporarily homeless<br />

for two months, meeting at a council<br />

car park. In 1964 the unit hired<br />

the upstairs portion <strong>of</strong> the Tamar<br />

Rowing Club. This was to be home<br />

tili 1970 In 1964 and 1968 field gun<br />

teams gave displays at the<br />

Launceston Show<br />

In 1970 the money was borrowed<br />

to complete the first stage <strong>of</strong> the<br />

hall This comprised the main hall<br />

(60 by 40 ft.), toilet block and a mess<br />
