Kaasaegse iiri näitekirjaniku näidend viib meid 1970-ndate
aastate lõpu Iirimaa väikelinnas Wexfordis asuvasse kihlveokontorisse. Seal veedavad oma
päevi kihlveokontori omanik Steven koos oma tütre Eileeniga, viimase sala-austaja Georgie,
kohalik mees Joe ning kihlveokontoris koristajana töötav Molly. Omavahelisi suhteid pingestab
kümne aasta tagune juhtum, mil Molly suur armastus Danger Doyle ta maha jättis ning Steveni
naise, Eileeni emaga, Londonisse põgenes. Siis aga jõuavad kihlveokontorisse kuulujutud, et
Danger Doyle on linna tagasi tulnud...…
Näidend otsibki vastust küsimusele, mis on siis parem – kas julgus oma elus muutusi teha ja
edasi liikuda või vastuseid minevikust otsida. Lopsaka iiri huumoriga tembitud nukkerpoeetiline
suhetedraama on Eesti soost Londonis tegutseva lavastaja debüüt kodumaises teatris.
“Nii või naa jaguneme me kõik kahte leeri: jääjateks või minejateks. Ja tegelikult viib see
lavastus meid lõpuks välja palju suuremasse sfääri – inimese eksistentsi, mis ulatub ühe (väike)
linna piiridest palju kaugemale. Mingil hetkel mandume me igas kohas, sest ükski idüll ega
ideaal ei püsi lõpmatuseni.”
This play by a modern Irish playwright takes us to a betting shop in a small Irish town called
Wexford in the end of the 1970s. This is the place where the owner of the betting shop, Steven,
spends long days with his daughter Eileen, the latter’s secret admirer George, a local man called
Joe and Molly who worked as a cleaning lady in the shop. The reciprocal relationships of the
characters are strained by a case dating back to ten years ago when Molly’s great love Danger
Doyle left her and eloped with Steven’s wife, Eileen’s mother, to London. But then rumours
reached the betting house that Danger Doyle had returned to town...
The play tries to find an answer to the following question – which is better – whether the courage
to make changes in one’s life and move on or to look for answers from the past. This exuberant
and sad-poetic relationship drama spiced with Irish humour is the Estonian origin – but Londonborn
and London-based – director’s debut in her native theatre.
“This way or another we are all divided into two groups: the coming or the going. And, actually,
this production finally takes us into a much greater sphere – the human existence that extends
far beyond the borders of one (small) town. At one point we deteriorate in any place for not one
idyll or ideal is eternal.”
