Chapter 4
Developing and Restoring the Waterways Network
Work started to automate Clarendon Lock, the only lock on the Boyle River between
the confluence with the Shannon and Lough Key. This involved the development and
fabrication of cofferdams for use on standard Lock Chambers in preparation for the
replacement of the lower gates in 2008. Tarmonbarry Lock House also underwent
refurbishment with final works scheduled for completion in 2008. This refurbishment
will provide improved visibility of the lock chamber for the lockkeeper when vessels are
passing through as well as upgrading the existing welfare facilities.
Works to facilitate the ease of passage to and from the Royal Canal upon its re-opening,
included dredging of the lower section of Camlin River, in Co Longford. In Scarriff,
Co Clare, a boat pump out station was installed at Scarriff Harbour increasing the total
number of pump out stations to 21 at 14 locations on the Shannon Navigation.
Eastern Region
4.1.6 Royal Canal
In Co Longford, works were completed on the construction of the new lifting bridge
at Begnagh. Works also commenced on the replacement of the existing bridge at
Mosstown.
A 600m section of bank reconstruction and lining was carried out between Ballydrum
Bridge and the 44th Lock near Killashee. Investigative works were completed at
Richmond Harbour Dry Dock, a major restoration of the 45th Lock was completed and
Cloonsheerin Culvert was fully restored. Negotiations continued with Westmeath
County Council to provide an adequate water supply to the Royal Canal.
