1.3 Accountability<br />
Waterways Ireland is accountable to <strong>the</strong> North / South Ministerial Council<br />
(NSMC) which approves its funding and in turn is accountable to <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />
Ireland Assembly/UK Parliament and Oireachtas na hÉireann <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> organisation’s<br />
per<strong>for</strong>mance and effectiveness.<br />
Departmental responsibility <strong>for</strong> Waterways Ireland rests with <strong>the</strong> Department of<br />
Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) and with <strong>the</strong> Department of Community, Rural and<br />
Gaeltacht Affairs (DCRGA).<br />
1.4 Locations<br />
Waterways Ireland’s Headquarters are in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh.<br />
The navigable waterway system on <strong>the</strong> island is divided into three Regions, Eastern,<br />
Western and Nor<strong>the</strong>rn. Regional offices are located in Dublin <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eastern Region;<br />
Scarriff, Co Clare, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Western Region and Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Region, with a number of works depots and offices around <strong>the</strong> system.<br />
