Foreword by the Chief Executive I am pleased to present this Annual Report and Accounts for Waterways Ireland. The report outlines the progress and achievements of the organisation during 2007. The use of the waterways under our care continues to grow and diversify, as the various navigations play host to a range of traditional and innovative events and activities, from fishing to wakeboarding and from boating to water skiing. Indeed some 1500 contestants took part in the Waterways Ireland triAthlone on the Shannon in July, in what was the largest triathlon event in Europe in 2007. To support and enhance the experience of all waterways users in 2007, we undertook refurbishment programmes across the navigations network, including the upgrading of recreational amenities, tow paths, footbridges and the provision of 770m of additional jetties. We also dedicated significant resources to improving the navigation experience, reviewing and revising navigation marking systems, clearing and realigning navigation channels and maintaining appropriate water levels. This year proved to be an extraordinary and exciting year for Waterways Ireland. In July the North South Ministerial Council (NSMC) agreed to proceed with the restoration of the section of the Ulster Canal between Clones and Upper Lough Erne and charged Waterways Ireland with responsibility for this restoration. Coupled with the ongoing work to reopen the Royal Canal, this project furthers the vision of a fully integrated, navigable, inland waterways network throughout the island of Ireland. We also saw work commence on our new Headquarters building in Enniskillen, a much anticipated and needed facility for our staff. We continue, however, to be mindful that the success of Waterways Ireland’s activities is dependent upon quality waterway environments. We have a significant responsibility to facilitate the conservation and management of the waterways as resources of regional and international heritage significance. We commenced the development of inventories of heritage structures in 2007 to inform the design and management of all of our future projects. The staff and management of Waterways Ireland have worked closely with our sponsor Departments to meet delivery of our agreed programme for 2007 and I would like to thank our sponsor Departments, the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure and the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and their Ministers for their support. I would also like to note my thanks to the Joint Secretariat of the North/South Ministerial Council, the Department of Finance and Personnel and the Department of Finance and their officers, for their commitment and support. As ever, I would like to express my gratitude to the staff of Waterways Ireland for their continued commitment, dedication and hard work which has been key to the success of the organisation to date. I have no doubt that 2008 will bring many challenges and opportunities for Waterways Ireland.
