It is strongly recommended that meals prepared at home or purchased from
outside suppliers are not consumed during your child’s admission at the hospital.
Cooking, transporting and then reheating food from home can cause harmful
bacteria to grow in the food, which can cause your child to become unwell.
It is important that if you wish to bring food prepared at home or
purchased from outside suppliers into the hospital, that you follow these
guidelines:
• Meals prepared at home should be transported with an icepack and in
an insulated food carry bag (such as an esky). Food transported at room
temperature is more likely to allow bacteria to grow and make your child
unwell.
• If high-risk foods are brought into the hospital, they should be
consumed immediately. Food items that have not been prepared in the
main kitchen cannot be stored in the ward refrigerator or freezer.
• A microwave is available in the ward kitchen so that you may reheat
meals. Make sure the meal is heated through evenly.
• It is important that you check with your child’s nurse before giving your
child food that has not been prepared by the hospital, to make sure it
will not interfere with your child’s medical treatment.
Oncology Pharmacy
The Centre has an Oncology Pharmacy near the ward. The pharmacy prepares
and dispenses all the drugs used to treat your child’s cancer. If you have any
questions about your childs drug treatment, side effects of medications, over
the counter products or alternative medications, please talk to the oncology
pharmacy staff between 8:30 am – 5:30 pm Monday to Friday. You can find the
number on the Hot Numbers card.
Parking
A special daily rate is available for parents whose child has a Child Disability
(CD) health care card (see your social worker for more information). Please
show your child’s health care card at the front enquiry desk to obtain a
concession card. Your child’s social worker can arrange for discount parking
pending the issuing of the health care card.
