The DOU has booked times for all treatments such as chemotherapy,
blood products, central line care or the administration of other medications.
Appointments can be booked by your treating team; alternatively you can
make an appointment for procedures such as central line care by phoning
the DOU yourself at the number listed on the Hot Numbers card in
The Information book.
The DOU is open between 8.00 am – 6.00 pm Monday to Friday and Saturday
from 8.00 am – 2.00 pm.
Transfer to ward
Children have a variety of treatments in the DOU. These vary from a quick
push of chemotherapy to an all day infusion of chemotherapy / fluids or blood
products. Sometimes children will need to be transferred from the DOU to a
ward to finish off treatment at the end of the day. Outpatient treatment in the
DOU may also include lumbar punctures or other procedures.
Things to do
The Outpatient Department is a busy place with lots of children, siblings
and families. There are a number of activities to join in while waiting or while
your child is having treatment. These include art, music, Nintendos ® , TV,
videos, books and toys. Tea and coffee facilities are available in the kitchen in
the sixth floor Family Resource Room.

facilities such as accommodation, Family Resource Centre, retail pharmacy, gift
shop, money and valuables, banks and transport. There is a copy of this guide
with The Information Book. If you need another, please ask for a copy.
ATM cash point
Located in the front entry and at the cafeteria on Level 1.
Family Resource Centre
The RCH Family Resource Centre is located on the first floor, main building.
It is a non‐clinical place with a wide range of facilities for family and care-givers
including internet access, quiet room, resource information, tea and coffee
supplies.
