<strong>The</strong> DOU has <strong>book</strong>ed times for all treatments such as chemotherapy,<br />
blood products, central line care or the administration of other medications.<br />
Appointments can be <strong>book</strong>ed by your treating team; alternatively you can<br />
make an appointment for procedures such as central line care by phoning<br />
the DOU yourself at the number listed on the Hot Numbers card in<br />
<strong>The</strong> Information <strong>book</strong>.<br />
<strong>The</strong> DOU is open between 8.00 am – 6.00 pm Monday to Friday and Saturday<br />
from 8.00 am – 2.00 pm.<br />
Transfer to ward<br />
Children have a variety of treatments in the DOU. <strong>The</strong>se vary from a quick<br />
push of chemotherapy to an all day infusion of chemotherapy / fluids or blood<br />
products. Sometimes children will need to be transferred from the DOU to a<br />
ward to finish off treatment at the end of the day. Outpatient treatment in the<br />
DOU may also include lumbar punctures or other procedures.<br />
Things to do<br />
<strong>The</strong> Outpatient Department is a busy place with lots of children, siblings<br />
and families. <strong>The</strong>re are a number of activities to join in while waiting or while<br />
your child is having treatment. <strong>The</strong>se include art, music, Nintendos ® , TV,<br />
videos, <strong>book</strong>s and toys. Tea and coffee facilities are available in the kitchen in<br />
the sixth floor Family Resource Room.<br />
Hospital facilities<br />
Your Guide to <strong>The</strong> Royal Children’s Hospital, has details about the hospital<br />
facilities such as accommodation, Family Resource Centre, retail pharmacy, gift<br />
shop, money and valuables, banks and transport. <strong>The</strong>re is a copy of this guide<br />
with <strong>The</strong> Information Book. If you need another, please ask for a copy.<br />
ATM cash point<br />
Located in the front entry and at the cafeteria on Level 1.<br />
Family Resource Centre<br />
<strong>The</strong> RCH Family Resource Centre is located on the first floor, main building.<br />
It is a non‐clinical place with a wide range of facilities for family and care-givers<br />
including internet access, quiet room, resource <strong>information</strong>, tea and coffee<br />
supplies.<br />
