PRESIDENTS REPORT 2008 - 2009
The 2008/2009 swimming season has been a very busy one for our swimmers and parents. Due to the increase in
the number of competitive swimmers our club has competed at a large number of Meets (Carnivals) this season.
Our swimmers achieved great results at meets run by the National, State and Regional bodies with some of their
achievements listed below.
National Meets:
Both Kate Thomson and Michael Evans have travelled and competed at both the 2009 Telstra Australian
Swimming Championships and the 2009 Australian Age Championships in Sydney during March and April 2009.
Congratulations to you both for achieving this outstanding accomplishment. Michael went on to win the Silver
medal in the 200 metre 16 year old backstroke final at the Age Champs. Once again a great achievement and well
deserved.
State Titles: 9 members competed in the State Swimming Titles in December 2008. At this meet Michael Evans
received 1 gold, two bronze medals and 6 final placing’s for his efforts.
State Sprints: In February 2008 we had 24 members nominate for the State Sprint Championships with Kate
Thomson, Michael Evans, Noah Milne, and Sarah Ryan all receiving medals. At this meet we had 24 final
placing’s, 4 semi-final placing’s and 34 personal best time achieved.
Regional Champs: We had 30 swimmers attend the Regional championships with 97 final berths and
approximately 30 top three placing’s during the two days of this meet. Carlo Oliaro was in excellent form and he
was named as the Boys 12 year old Regional Champion for 2009.
District Champs: 21 members competed at this meet which for the first time that I can remember was held in a 25
metre pool using a short course format. For many of our members it was their first competitive meet. It was great
to see the level of participation in the individual and relay events. At these District Champs our swimmers received
a total of 21 Championship medals and 32 Development medals.
Hervey Bay Open: 54 members competed at our meet resulting in many of our members qualifying for the
Regional Championships. This is one of the largest numbers of members we have had compete at our meet. To all
the committee members, parents and non swimming members who volunteered their time during the course of the
day thank you. It was a long day with 290 competitors swimming in excess of 209 heats which makes our meet
one of the largest in the Region. The outstanding success of our carnival was, in part, the result of the work of
those who volunteered.
Your committee has applied to Swimming Qld to upgrade our meet to an A Grade Open meet for next season. We
hope to be able to provide both 800 and 1500 metre events on the Friday evening and then our normal program on
Saturday.
Carnival Swimming Overview: All the swimmers who represented the club at meets through out this season
performed extremely well and were a credit to the club. Many personal best times were achieved, finals reached
and medals won. We have been represented by members at 14 swimming carnivals this season with 70 members
competing at between 1 and 14 meets. This is a great achievement for our club
Junior Excellence: 34 of our swimmers will be eligible for Australian Junior Excellence awards. These awards
are provided to those swimmers aged 9 to 13 who achieve set times in specific strokes and distances at approved
meets. It is a great achievement that so many of our younger members have been successful in reaching these
levels.
