MALENY SWIMMING CLUB
The 2008/09 season has been eventful and seen many changes for the Maleny Club. Good outcomes have
been achieved across a range of areas, though at times it has been challenging. Thank goodness for the
wonderful people that make up this Club and their ability to see the good in everything and everyone.
We had a busy start to the year with the appointment of new/old Pool Manager – Brad Hale, and the effort
to secure Council funding for our Pool. This is a huge step for the Maleny Swimming Club, receiving a budget
allocation from the Council for the first time ever. This alleviates enormous pressure from the club
committee, with not having to worry about raising thousands of dollars a year needed just to keep pool
open for community use. It also means a more secure financial opportunity for the Pool Manager and
makes taking on the Lease for this pool a more attractive prospective for Coaches. We hope that with the
continued support of Jenny McKay and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council this funding will continue in
future seasons. Council funding has meant that we have been able to allocate fundraised money to projects
rather than running costs and we’ve even been able to put aside some money for replacement of major
equipment. Knowing we can just about scrape enough to replace a heat pump, is a big relief to the
committee.
A notable achievement for the Club has been the introduction of our new logo, with new club shirts, togs
and caps. Uptake of the new design has been universal, with nearly all our competitive swimmers also
sporting the club togs and caps.
Our home carnival in February was again a great success. Over 260 swimmers attended, with their parents
and siblings. Our carnival has grown every year and is a credit to the whole club and community. Every year
we receive congratulations from participating clubs on the efficient running of the carnival and its friendly
atmosphere of encouragement and participation. It is one of the few development carnivals in the area and
we are becoming victims of our own success in that the facility we have can’t really support the number of
swimmers we are attracting to the carnival. We don’t really have the space for 500 plus participants around
the pool, nor do we have the toilet/change room facilities for that number. We are planning on how to
handle and improve these things for next year.
The Committee continues working towards a new aquatic facility on the Maleny Precinct. We secured a
grant and are in the process of preparing a Development Plan. The first step in a long process to secure
Maleny a new pool.
Our swimmers have had great successes this year. We have 40 registered swimmers, roughly half being
competitive. All swimmers have achieved improvement in their swimming, many have experienced
competitive swimming for the first time through carnivals and all, most importantly, have enjoyed a healthy
activity with their families and friends. Many Club and Pool records were broken along the way.
