Emerging Ritual - Ritual, Ritual Competence and Ritual Criticism by
Ronald L. Grimes
BA-Interdisciplinary Studies / Introduction to Methods
Di 14—16 LG 1 247b
S WP O/Q
Ronald L. Grimes is one of the todays most important scholars in the field of ritual studies. Twenty years
ago, he introduced the notion of "emerging ritual". In contrast to traditional concepts of ritual, he
concentrates on the process of ritualization - and not on ritual as fixed structure. Many question emerge
from his new insight: What are the meanings and functions of rituals in a given culture? How were rituals
invented? According which ideas and rules do people invent new rituals? And especially: What kind of
knowlegde and competence is necessary for this kind of ritual practice? In our seminar we will read and
discuss Ronald L. Grimes theories but we also study some cases of ritual practice.
