Looking at the nonverbal cues of humans, the meaning of the face gets obvious: Most of the
communicative signals are coming from the face – and also it is the first dominant expression of
communication. Initially, in the seminar a communicative science basis to understand nonverbal
communication and especially the communicative signals of the face has to be developed. But then the
relation between face and identity will be in the centre of interest – and especially the modulation and
change of the face will be looked at in more detail. This has to be done in a creative – artful – way. In
this sense it is a prerequisite that the participants of the seminar embark on creative experiments.

Barack Obama and the "new" America

In the context of this lecture series, which will be held by a number of different lecturers, changes will be
explained which are taking place in the U.S. since Barack Obama took office. In addition, information
about the U.S., its specific politics and culture, will be provided.
By example of Barack Obama, the position of the President in the U.S. political system will be examined.
Also, presentations will be given on different political and cultural aspects such as civil religion, as well as
the meaning of the family. ´Furthermore, the special position of Obama as the first African American
President, as well as his historical reminiscence with Abraham Lincoln will be scrutinized in the same
manner as the political change in the U.S. foreign policy, especially concerning the dealing with islamic
states.
The lecture series is organized by the department for Political Theory at the University of Erfurt in
cooperation with the U.S. Consulate General Leipzig and the Department for Political Education, Thuringia.

The seminar has four parts. Firstly, moral philosophical questions of the shoa and the German guilt will be
discussed on the basis of texts of i.a. Wiesenthal, Polleyfext and Jaspers. Secondly, the economic aspects
of the German recompense will be highlighted. Thirdly, the topic "Topf und Söhne" will be elaborated by
delineating the history of the company and biographies. Fourthly, a visit of Buchenwald and meetings
with contemporary witnesses will take place.
