But it seems quite difficult to define „justice“ to suit everybodies conception of it. The term „social“ might be understood in different ways, too. Is it a legal category or rather an ethical one? The students will discuss different aspects of „social justice“ and the (im-)possibility of a widely accepted definition. One lecture shall follow the idea of justice throughout the centuries culminating in the question what can be expected from todays „sozialstaat“ from an ecclesiastical or a legal view. The role of priests and judges in everyday-life will be discussed. What idea of man is implemented, and how is the „zeitgeist“ influencing personal decisions concerning „social justice“? These places and times are full of history and stories, experience, brutality, suffering and pain, full of humanity, despair and disgrace. All these places and memorial days are complex settings, loaded and criss-crossed also by theology, metaphysics, conflicts, architecture and politics. But all these places are at the same time about us, collective memory, responsibility, and politics of rememberance. In its first section the seminar will present and discuss diverse concepts of and for these places to commemorate and memoriel days. The second part will consist in two excursion to the Buchenwalds concentration camp and the Stasi-prison in Erfurt.
