This seminar examines variation in English from a sociolinguistic perspective. It focuses primarily on the
range of variation that exists between different regional varieties of English throughout the world and on
the sociolectal variation that exists within British and North-American English. Possible causes for this
variation will be examined (among them, contact with other languages). The seminar will start with a
short series of introductory sessions. Afterwards, students will have to present talks on topics of their
choice that fall within the scope of the seminar.
This seminar focuses on the acquisition of spoken English in young monolingual and bilingual children
who are learning English from birth. It traces the development of phonology, the lexicon, morphosyntax
and pragmatic and discourse skills. In addition to describing these developments, the seminar also
examines theories of child language acquisition that have been put forward to explain how children
develop English as a first language.
After the introductory sessions, students are expected to give a talk about a topic of their choice that
relates to the early acquisition of English.
