In this seminar, we will extend and elaborate on existing knowledge about the English language system.
Intonation will be our phonological topic. Our morphological topic will be derivation as a word formation
from a historical perspective. In the syntactic part, we will deal with the structure of complex noun
phrases as well as non-finite subordinate clauses. In addition, we will take a look at constructions that
allow us to manipulate the fixed order of the syntactic relations in the English clause (SVO) in accordance
with discourse requirements.
HS WP Q
Second-language acquisition studies have long maintained that important insights into a foreign target
language can be gained by studying in which respects this language contrasts with the mother tongue so
as to avoid negative transfer (interference) and strengthen positive transfer (facilitation).
In this seminar, we will investigate the structure of English from a contrastive perspective, i.e. by
compiling a large-scale comparison between English and German which encompasses all levels of the
respective language systems, from their lexica, via their phonology and inflectional morphology, to their
clausal/sentential syntax.
