320 In this connection it is regretted that the numeral deflignators for Regions 8 for LOS Angles and 7 for Seattle were inadvertently reversed on page 9 of the Manual. They should be changed on all copies to show designations as follows: Region 7, Seattle, Waah. 168-02R7 Region 6, LOS Angle8, Calif. 168-02RB THUNDERSTORM WARNING SYSTEM The Weather Bureau, in cooperation with the Office of Civilian De- fense, has. established over 100 severe storm warning networks in the vicinity of military air bases. The program is about completed in Re- gions 4 and 6 and under way in Regions 2 and 3. Each network consists of about 80 observation points where local persons telephone severe storm warning information to a central location. The work of organiz- ing the service is based upon experience gained in establishing and op- erating thunderstorm warning networks for the protection of ordnauce and shell loading plants. The Kansas City Regional Office reports that one of the innovations in improving the network service which has brought about better recogni- tion of the individual observers waa initiated by the Cornhuslrer and Nebraska Ordnance Plants. These two plants held a field day for the observers last semon and plan to do the same this year. Two other plants are planning to recognize the observers with a similar reward. Pictures of the observers in the plant paper, personal lctters, greeting cards, and mention in local newspapers has increased the effectiveness of the observers BB reflected by desirable results. The publicity was instigated by plant officials and indicates their opinion of the prograni. RETfREMENT BOOKLET A supply of the new Civil Service booklet entitled ‘I Your Retircmcnf Systeni” dated Junc 1944, has been mailed to all Rogioiial Offices for distribution to field stations. This booklet contains some very interest- ing information on retirement and should be read by all employees. The supply of this booklet is limited to station distribution only; individual copies are for salc by the Superintendent of Documents, U, S. Government Printing Office, Washington 25, D. C. at 10 cants per copy. Stations which have not received a copy of this booklet should notify their Regional Office. TRANSFER OF RIVER FORECABTING RESPONSIBILITIES Effective July 1, 1944, the river district work assigned to the Weather Bureau Office, Concordia, Kans., waa transferred to the Weather Bureau Office, Topeka, Kans. The Topeka river district comprises the follow. ing drainage area: Kansas River and tributaries above Lawrence, Kans. ; Osage River and tributaries in Kansas. t The Concordia office will serve a local river forecast interpretatiofi and dissemination center.
a31 CONSOLIDATION AT LYNCHBURG, VA. Effective July 31, 1944, all Weather Bureau activities formerly con- ducted at the Lynchburg city office were transferred to the Airport Station. The observational program consists of hourly surface reports with 3- and &hourly additive data. At the request of thc Navy the Weather Bureau is establishing pibals at the Lynchburg Airport Station. Four scheduled absorvations will be lnade daily. FIRST- ORDER STATIONS ESTABLISHED Effective June 16, 1944, a first-order station was established at Dunnellon, Fla. The observational program consists of hourly surface reports, with 3- and 6-hourly additive data. Effective July 10, 1044, n first-order station was established at Peters- burg, Va., to provide special forecast service for the Navy Air Fcrry Command. The observational program consists of hourly surface r~ports, with 8- and 6-hourly additive data. - OBSERVATIONAL PROGRAM-KEY WEST, FLA, Effective June 22, 1944, additional Weatlier Bureau personnel were &signed to tlw Key West, Fla,, Airport Station (Boca Chica Airport) to relieve CAA personnel of all weather observing dutics. The observational program consists of pilot-balloon observations (equipment moved from city ofice) and hourly Rurface reports, with 8- and 6-hourly additive data. - TRANSFER OF ACTIVITISS-WILLMAR, MINN. Effective July 1, 1044, the opwation of tho etation at Willmar, Minn., Was transferred from the Weather Bureau to tho Civil Aeronautics Ad- ministration.
