guides to the probability of certain weather occurrences in diffcrent sea-
sons of the year. Also; 5n addition to activc operations they afford
valuable information for such things as the location of kraining centers
for military services, aa well 88 health safeguards for our boys on the
active fronts throughout the globe.
When this war has been won and we return to peacctimc pursuitst
the lessons learned from the practical application of climatological
data to many and varied uses will emphasize more than ever before the
importance of weather and climate to many peacetime cconomic activi-
ties. Very little imagination is required to envision climatological needs
for a greatly expanded world-wide aerial transportation service and only
slightly more incntal effort to foresee a tremendous demapd for pro-
cessed data in the field of surface transportation, general industry, and
for many other important economic problems. While the present war
activities may temporarily distract our thoughb from vital post-war
needs, everyone engaged in climatological work should realize that, hi@
or her offorb are essential to the nation’s weal, not only in the prosed
war, but in the peace to come.
RED CROSS FUND GOES OVER THE TOP

of the Red Cross Fund Drive expressing appreciation to the personnel
of the Central OWce for their gencrou8 response to the appeal of the Red

RADIOSONDE TRAINING
After more than a year and a half of operation, the radiosonde school
at the Washington National Airport was discontinued on January 7th4
During the period of operation 340 students were given instruction in
radiosonde technique. Of this number 84 wcre Weather 13ureau pore
sonnel, 246 Army personnel, I) Canadian Metcorological Service person’
nel, and 2 Mexican Meteorological Service personnel. With tho closing
of the school, 6 of the instructors were detailed to field radiosonde sta*
tions where 3 to 6 weeks’ training courses are being conducted.
A RECORD IN ACCURACY
The radiosonde observations at Wnshington National Airport are 2
being made by women. During the first 6 weeks of thcir responsibilitY’r
not a single chargeable error was made by these young women. In
