Appointment and PromotionIn making appointments, the only criterion must be fitness forthe position. Before this paramount consideration, all others,such as seniority, social or financial status, family connectionor personal friendship, must give way. Bahá’u’lláh says in theTablet of Ishráqát:—The fifth Ishráq (Effulgence) is the knowledge by governmentsof the condition of the governed, and the conferring ofranks according to desert and merit. Regard to this matter isstrictly enjoined upon every chief and ruler, that haply traitorsmay not usurp the positions of trustworthy men nor spoilersoccupy the seats of guardians.It needs but little consideration to show that when this principlebecomes generally accepted and acted upon, the transformationin our social life will be astounding. When each individual isgiven the position for which his talents and capabilities speciallyfit him he will be able to put his heart into his work and becomean artist in his profession, with incalculable benefit to himselfand the rest of the world.
