Social Troubles After <strong>the</strong> WarBoth Bahá’u’lláh <strong>and</strong> ‘Abdu’l-Bahá also foretold a period ofgreat social upheaval, conflict <strong>and</strong> calamity as an inevitableresult of <strong>the</strong> irreligion <strong>and</strong> prejudices, <strong>the</strong> ignorance <strong>and</strong> superstition,prevalent throughout <strong>the</strong> world. The great internationalmilitary conflict was but one phase of this upheaval. In a Tabletdated January, 1920, He wrote:—O ye lovers of truth! O ye servants of mankind! As<strong>the</strong> sweet fragrance of your thoughts <strong>and</strong> high intentions hasbrea<strong>the</strong>d upon me, I feel that my soul is irresistibly promptedto communicate with you.Ponder in your hearts how grievous is <strong>the</strong> turmoil in which<strong>the</strong> world is plunged; how <strong>the</strong> nations of <strong>the</strong> earth are besmearedwith human blood, nay <strong>the</strong>ir very soil is turned intoclotted gore. The flame of war has caused so wild a conflagrationthat <strong>the</strong> world in its early days, in its middle ages, orin modern times has never witnessed its like. The millstonesof war have ground <strong>and</strong> crushed many a human head, nay,even more severe has been <strong>the</strong> lot of <strong>the</strong>se victims. Flourishingcountries have been made desolate, cities have beenlaid level with <strong>the</strong> ground, <strong>and</strong> smiling villages have beenturned into ruin. Fa<strong>the</strong>rs have lost <strong>the</strong>ir sons, <strong>and</strong> sons turnedfa<strong>the</strong>rless. Mo<strong>the</strong>rs have shed tears of blood in mourningfor <strong>the</strong>ir youths, little children have been made orphans, <strong>and</strong>women left w<strong>and</strong>erers <strong>and</strong> homeless. In a word, humanity, inall its phases, has been debased. Loud is <strong>the</strong> cry <strong>and</strong> wailingof orphans, <strong>and</strong> bitter <strong>the</strong> lamentations of mo<strong>the</strong>rs which areechoed by <strong>the</strong> skies.The prime cause for all <strong>the</strong>se happenings is racial, national,religious, <strong>and</strong> political prejudice, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> root of allthis prejudice lies in outworn <strong>and</strong> deepseated traditions, be<strong>the</strong>y religious, racial, national, or political.
