Voluntary SharingIn a letter to <strong>the</strong> Central Organization for a Durable Peace, writtenin 1919, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá says:—Among <strong>the</strong> teachings of Bahá’u’lláh is voluntary sharingof one’s property with o<strong>the</strong>rs among mankind. This voluntarysharing is greater than (legally imposed) equality, <strong>and</strong> consistsin this, that one should not prefer oneself to o<strong>the</strong>rs, but ra<strong>the</strong>rshould sacrifice one’s life <strong>and</strong> property for o<strong>the</strong>rs. But thisshould not be introduced by coercion so that it becomes a lawwhich man is compelled to follow. Nay, ra<strong>the</strong>r, man shouldvoluntarily <strong>and</strong> of his own choice sacrifice his property <strong>and</strong>life for o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>and</strong> spend willingly for <strong>the</strong> poor, just as is donein Persia among <strong>the</strong> Bahá’ís.
