Each was the “Way, the Truth and the Life” toHis followers. Each was the channel of God’s bounty to everyheart that would receive it. Each had His part to play in the greatdivine plan for the upliftment of humanity.
CreationBahá’u’lláh teaches that the universe is without beginning intime. It is a perpetual emanation from the Great First Cause. TheCreator always had His creation and always will have. Worldsand systems may come and go, but the universe remains. Allthings that undergo composition, in time undergo decomposition,but the component elements remain. The creation of a world, adaisy or a human body is not “making something out of nothing”;it is rather a bringing together of elements which beforewere scattered, a making visible of something which before washidden. By and by the elements will again be scattered, theform will disappear, but nothing is really lost or annihilated;ever new combinations and forms arise from the ruins of the old.Bahá’u’lláh confirms the scientists who claim, not six thousand,but millions and billions of years for the history of the earth’screation. The evolution theory does not deny creative power. Itonly tries to describe the method of its manifestation; and thewonderful story of the material universe which the astronomer,the geologist, the physicist and the biologist are gradually unfoldingto our gaze is, rightly appreciated, far more capable ofevoking the deepest reverence and worship than the crude andbald account of creation given in the Hebrew Scriptures. Theold account in the Book of Genesis had, however, the advantageof indicating by a few bold strokes of symbolism the essentialspiritual meanings of the story, as a master painter may, by a fewstrokes of the brush, convey expressions which the mere plodderwith the most laborious attention to details may utterly fail toportray. If the material details blind us to the spiritual meaning,then we should be better without them; but if we have oncefirmly grasped the essential meaning of the whole scheme, thenknowledge of the details will give our conception a wonderfuladded richness and splendor and make it a magnificent pictureinstead of a mere sketch plan.
