1.4 <strong>System</strong> Scope and Definition of Terms<br />

The ASA system scope is all of the elements depicted in Figure 1-1. It should be noted<br />

that the transmit function shown in Figure 1-1 can be implemented in either the airborne<br />

segment (ADS-B Out) or in a ground segment, as <strong>for</strong> the TIS-B or ADS-R functions.<br />

The ADS-B system scope is the middle three elements shown in Figure 1-1, including:<br />

the Transmit subsystem, the broadcast link RF medium, and the Receive & report<br />

generation function. It should be noted that the transmit function shown in Figure 1-1<br />

can be implemented in the airborne segment (ADS-B Out).<br />
