Universal precautions should also be taken when rendering first aid to avoid anycontamination.1) All blood samples and body fluids should be handled and treated as if they areinfectious.2) If blood is drawn, provisions for a thorough cleansing of the site must be followed.3) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn, including latex gloves, fluidshield mask and a disposable apron, (to protect from contact with blood and bodyfluids).4) Proper disposal methods for all contaminated materials should be enforced.2.4 Alcohol and DrugsThe use of alcohol and drugs increases the risk of accidents and injuries. Employeesmust be aware of country, client and contractor policies on drugs and alcohol. Illegaldrugs and unauthorized consumption of alcohol are not allowed on any crew, and theiruse is cause for dismissal.Most facilities and companies do not allow alcohol under any circumstances, such as oncrews with 24-hour operations or on board seismic vessels. It is the responsibility of theemployee to abide by the policy of the client, contractor and crew on which they areworking.Prescription and over-the-counter drugs may also impair performance. Consult yourphysician and/or label instructions as to any work-related risk. Advise your immediatesupervisor of any drugs being used so proper safety precautions can be taken. Theemployee has the responsibility to report the use of all prescription or non-prescriptiondrugs or medications prior to reporting to duty.2.5 Malaria1) Malaria, especially falciparum malaria, is a serious condition that is transmitted bymosquitoes.2) The best preventive measure is to eliminate being bitten by mosquitoes carryingmalaria.Page 18 of 136
