h) Use a leaning or guard stick. This is a stick held in the opposite hand to themachete and used to balance the body when slashing. It also serves to protectthe legs if you inadvertently slash towards them.2) Machete’s point should be end round-shaped3) Machetes should be inspected daily for defects; defective machetes should bereplaced or repaired. Keep all cutting instruments sharp.4) Machete sheaths should be carried at all times and should be used when themachete is not in use. Do not leave the sheaths in the boat or along the line.5) Machete users should be separated along the line at least 3 m (10 ft.) apart.6) Users should check the work area for other workers and hazards before they beginto cut.
