4.2.2 Portable Drills and Mini Hole Drills1) Before starting drilling, discuss how you are going to keep the stemmings orcuttings away from the hole. A dust deflector, shovel or rake may be used.Never use your foot or hands to remove dirt.2) Make sure the area around the drill location is level and clear of obstructions. Aplatform may need to be built for the portable drill.3) Only approved containers for fuel can be used and must be properly marked asto their contents. These containers must be kept away from portable magazinescarrying explosives and caps.4) Fuel tanks must be mounted away from hot parts of the engine or other ignitionsources. Where this is not possible, only metal fuel cans with explosionpreventers fitted into the spout should be used.5) Where fuel tanks are mounted to the drill, engines should be switched off beforerefueling. Care must be taken to avoid spills.6) When an air drill is being used, the air pressure must be completely releasedbefore breaking any line or connection. Check the gauge. Do not use yourhands to check an air stream.4.2.3 Marsh Buggy Drills1) Personnel will board and exit only in areas which have been equipped withhandrails and steps, climb and descend backwards facing the marsh buggy. Usecaution walking on buggy tracks, they become slippery.2) Be sure the tracks are clear of personnel and other equipment before putting thebuggy into motion.3) Be sure equipment is secure before crossing levees and canals. If possible,unload passengers first.4) Follow all field safety procedures and line sketch information when operating thebuggy. Do not drive buggy off line without permission.5) Personnel riding on the buggy should use extreme caution. Sit only in designatedareas and not on the engine cover, fuel cans, back hoe, etc. Remain seated atall times when the buggy is underway. Obey the instructions of the operator.6) Always wear Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) when the buggy is in the water.7) Keep deck and drill area clean of greases and other slippery substances.8) Keep fuel in proper containers in a safe designated area.9) Never jump from the buggy to the ground.10) Back up alarms should be operational.4.2.4 Airboat DrillsPage 73 of 136
