FIELD EXCURSIONS
InterRad VII Osaka, 1994
Pre-Conference Field Excursion I (Paleozoic)
Late Paleozoic bedded cherts and Permian/Triassic
boundary in the Tanba Terrane, Southwest Japan
Date: 18 Oct. (Tue) through 20 Oct. (Thu), 1994.
Excursion starts in or around Osaka and ends at IUSK
(Inter-University Seminar House of Kansai, the place of
conference).

This excursion has been organized to provide an
overview of the Meso-Paleozoic bedded chert sequence
embedded in the Jurassic accretionary rocks of Southwest
Japan, especially in the Sasayama area situated 25 km
north of the IUSK. It starts in Upper Carboniferous
oceanic basalt/red bedded cherts. Progressively younger
successions of the bedded chert sequence will be visited in
and around the area with an emphasis on radiolarian and
conodont biostratigraphy, and geochemical and stable
isotopic studies. Attention will focuse on analysis of
rhythmicity in the bedded cherts which correlates with
global change in oceanic conditions. Particular emphasis
will be directed to the Permian/Triassic boundary event
recorded in the bedded chert sequence.
Provisional schedule
18 October (Tue): Assemble at Kansai International
Airport (KIX) or Osaka City University (OCU) at
9:00 AM. Transportation is by courtesy minibus
during this excursion. Travel to Sasayama (about 2.5
hours drive) to examine Carboniferous greenstone and
red bedded chert sequence and the Permian/Triassic
bedded cherts crossing the boundary. Stay at Sasayama
(ryokan=Japanese inn or hotel).
19 October (Wed): Visit the northem part of the Sasayama
area to examine lithologic change of the Upper
Permian bedded chert to P/T boundary beds (claystones
and organic black mudstones) in detail. Upper Triassic
chert sequence representing clear rhythmicity. Travel
to Kyoto to stay and sightsee in the evening.
20 October (Thu): Visit Hozukyo gorge, west of Kyoto
City, to examine Triassic conodont biostratigraphy
and rhythmicity of Triassic to Early Jurassic bedded
cherts. Travel to IUSK in the afternoon (about 2 hours
drive from Hozukyo). Fee: ¥ 30,000 (including
accommodation, transportation and 6 meals).
Pre-Conference Field Excursion 11 (Mesozoic)
Triassic-Jurassic radiolarian-bearing sequences in the Mino
Terrane, Central Japan
Date: 19 Oct. (Wed) through 20 Oct. (Thu), 1994.
Excursion starts at a hotel near JR Shin-Osaka
Station and ends at IUSK (the Inter-University Seminar
House of Kansai, the place of conference).

The Inuyama area is about 25 km to the north of
Nagoya City. This field excursion concentrates on
continuous Triassic-Jurassic sequences composed of Early
Triassic claystone, Middle Triassic to Early Jurassic
bedded chert, Middle Jurassic siliceous mudstone, and
Middle Jurassic clastic rocks. Extensive biostratigraphic
studies on Triassic-Jurassic radiolaria and Triassic
conodonts have been carried out on these sequences.
Participants will be able to collect rock samples
containing radiolarian faunas of Triassic-Jurassic age.
Provisional schedule
19 October (Wed): Assemble at a hotel near JR Shin-
Osaka Station at 7:30 AM. Travel to Inuyama by bus and
spend a full day along the river bank of the Kiso River.
Stay at Inuyama.
20 October (Thu): Spend a half day in the Inuyama area
for further observation or for a visit to Inuyama Castle,
and travel to IUSK.
Fee: ¥ 30,000 including accommodation on 18 October
(Tue). Note: All participants are recommended to stay at a
hotel near JR Shin-Osaka Station on 18 October. Further
information will be given in the third circular.
Post-Conference Field Excursion (Cenozoic)
Neogene siliceous microfossil-bearing sequences of the
Northern Kanto District
Date: 25 Oct. (Tue) through 27 Oct. (Thu), 1994.
Excursion starts and ends at JR Utsunomiya Station.
Organizers: SAKAI, Toyosaburo and AITA,
Yoshiaki (Utsunomiya University)
This field trip will focus on radiolarian paleoecology
in the biosiliceous facies of the Upper Miocene Arakawa
Group. The upper part of the Group contains abundant
radiolarians and diatoms in sandy mudstones and
diatomaceous mudstones of the Oogane, Tanokura, and
Irieno Formations. A sudden marked increase in the
abundance of Cyrtocapsella japonica (Nakaseko) in this
section represents a major paleoceanographic event which
can be traced throughout NE Japan. This horizon is
within the Didymocyrtis antepenultima Zone and
probably reflects a regional cooling event. We will also
look at other aspects of the geology of the Northern
Kanto District, notably the underlying Nakagawa Group,
which is composed of andesite volcanic breccias, and the
Pleistocene Shiobara Group, which mainly consists of
lake deposits including diatom-rich and plant fossilbearing
varve sediments at Shiobara. The second day will
include a visit to a traditional pottery at Koisago. Both
nights will be spent sampling the pleasures of a
traditional Japanese onsen (hot spa inn). For those
wishing to take part, an optional addition of an extra day
(28 Oct.) is planned to visit the beautiful shrines and
scenery at Nikko.

25 October (Tue): Assemble at JR Utsunomiya Station at
17:00. Travel by courtesy minibus to Koisago-Mitama
Onsen (hot spa) at Bato about 40 km East of Utsunomiya
City. Stay at Seizanso (Japanese onsen).
