News Radiolaria 14 from a Late-Cretaceous to Middle-Eocene siliceous limestone sequence in inland Marlborough, and combining geochemical data with his microfossil results to strengthen the evidence for a prolonged cool episode at the base of the Paleocene (with geochemists at Auckland University). Chris has also obtained a JSPS fellowship to join Yoshiaki Aita and Prof. Toyosaburo Sakai at The Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), predecessor of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) which JOI (Joint Oceanographic Institutions, Inc.) currently manages, produced an enormous wealth of new biostratigraphic information from its 96 legs. As ODP continues to gather data from all over the world it becomes increasingly important to establish and maintain Micropaleontological Reference Centers housing representative preparations of DSDP/ODP microfaunas and -floras to serve the international community of biostratigraphers. Four centers are located in the U.S. - Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, U.S. National Museum of Natural History, Texas A&M University and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The other Centers are located in Western Europe (Basel), USSR (Moscow), Japan (Tokyo) and New Zealand (Lower Hutt). The published Initial Reports contain contributions on the microfaunas and floras, recorded by the shipboard and shorelab parties and these include many new species descriptions. Core material is by no means inexhaustible and therefore access to it has to be restricted to requests for research material leading to publication. Even so, important material is sampled out of existence. The aim for the centers is thus: 1. Preserve material from important levels for all time. 2. Make it possible for researchers to see the quality of preservation and the composition of a large number of microfaunas and floras and, therefore, plan their own sample requests in the most advantageous way. 3. Allow scientists to compare actual prepared faunas and floras (equivalent to type material) with published figures and descriptions in the literature. 4. Provide reference collections at geographically widespread localities, enabling individual researchers to reach them easily and with a minimum of traveling cost. 5. Provide the above facility for scientists working on Foraminifera, Calcareous nannofossils, Radiolaria and Diatoms. Funding to prepare the radiolarian slides became available through JOI in October 1990. Annika Sanfilippo and Amy Weinheimer have to date prepared and distributed 2600 Tertiary samples from DSDP Legs 1-96. The samples were originally selected to give the best representation possible for each leg, approximately one sample per core, or one on either side of a zonal boundary. Foraminifera preparations are also complete for DSDP Micropaleontological Reference Centers Ocean Drilling Program - Deep Sea Drilling Project Annika Sanfilippo - 6 - Utsunomiya University for a year to work on comparisons between southem and northem mid-latitude Cretaceo-Paleogene radiolarians, with an emphasis on biostratigraphy, evolution and the K-T transition. Chris Hollis Legs 1-96, and diatom and nannofossil preparations have so far been made for approximately half of the legs. Funding is presently being requested to continue preparation of radiolarian slides for the ODP legs. Fossil Material Located at eight sites around the world, the Micropaleontological Reference Centers provide scientists with an opportunity to examine microfossils of various geologic ages and provenance. The collections cover four microfossil groups-calcareous nannofossils, foraminifers, radiolarians, and diatoms-selected from sediment cores obtained from the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and its successor, the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP). Material has so far been chosen from Legs 1 through 128, with each Center carrying identical sample sets. The organization has been supervised by John Saunders of the Western Europe Center and William Riedel of the U.S. West Coast facility under the mandate of the JOIDES Information Handling Panel. All fossil material maintained by the Reference Centers remains the property of the U.S. National Science Foundation and is held by the Centers on semipermanent loan. Ocean Drilling Program During its more than 7 years of seagoing operations, the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), operating the drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution, has cored almost 70,000 meters of deep-sea sediment. Like its predecessor, the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), which operated the drilling vesssel Glomar Challenger from 1968 to 1983, ODP has recovered cores from the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Southern Oceans and the Mediterranean and Norwegian-Greenland Seas. ODP is based in College Station, Texas, where Texas A&M University serves as Science Operator for the Program. Texas A&M provides administrative, staffing, and technical support for the JOIDES Resolution. Overall scientific planning and program advice are provided by an international scientific organisation, the Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling (JOIDES). Members of JOIDES panels and committees represent the United States, the Canada and Australia Consortium for Ocean Drilling, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Japan, the United Kingdom,
Radiolaria 14 News U.S.S.R.,* and the European Science Foundation Consortium for Ocean Drilling. Yearly membership contributions from each of these sources fund the operations of the Program. (*As of December 1991) Purpose Since 1968 the Glomar Challenger and her successor, the JOIDES Resolution, have recovered sediment cores from all the major ocean basins. This wealth of deep-sea material is providing scientists with important information on global history and giving paleontologists a great amount of new biostratigraphic data. Because critical levels from the cores will eventually be sampled out of existence, it is the primary goal of the Centers to preserve such prime reference material for both present and future investigators. At the eight Centers, the reference collections enable researchers to compare prepared material with the reports and illustrations published in DSDP Initial Reports and ODP Proceedings volumes. This will help to stabilize taxonomy and the review of biostratigraphic and paleoenvironmental problems.
