To helpmeet these requirements, system administrators candeploy RAID or other storage systems. Storage managementsoftware can enable administrators to create, configure, and monitor redundant virtual disks and managephysical disks.Since 1999, Dell has offered Dell OpenManage ArrayManager as its primary enterprise-level storage managementsoftware. In 2004, Dell introduced the Dell OpenManageServer Administrator Storage Management suite as a followonto Array Manager. This article examines the differencesbetween these two products and explains the features andcapabilities of Storage Management. In addition, this articlediscusses best practices for installing these two storagemanagement applications and for migrating from ArrayManager to Storage Management.Identifying differences between Array Managerand Storage ManagementAlthough Array Manager and Storage Management areboth designed to help manage storage devices, severaldifferences exist between the user interfaces and featuresets of these two tools. From a user perspective, thereare two major differences. First, Array Manager can beinstalled with other Dell OpenManage applications oras a stand-alone tool, while the Storage Managementarchitecture is integrated into the Dell OpenManagesuite and thus is installed only as part of the DellOpenManage suite. The second major difference is the user interface.Because Storage Management plugs into the DellOpenManage suite, it uses the Dell OpenManage Webserver interface (see Figure 1). Array Manager has its ownuser interface that can be launched independent of otherDell OpenManage applications. Also, in environmentsrunning the Microsoft ®Windows®2000 OS, Array Manageris a Microsoft Management Console and can be used inplace of Windows Logical Disk Manager.Besides user interaction, Storage Management andArray Manager differ in the environments they support—includingOS, storage controllers, platforms, andother configurations. Figure 2 compares the products andcapabilities that these two tools support.92DELL POWER SOLUTIONS Reprinted from Dell Power Solutions, August 2005.
